I can't throw my *bleep* on the beach!?

Yeah, admit it. You probably read the title with a dirty mind. But onward to the main story! If you haven't already heard, LA county is now enforcing a law subjecting people to hefty fines if you're caught throwing any ball on its beaches. It's surprisingly making headlines all over the US.

According to Lucy Kim, from the LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors, a first-time offender will have to pay a $100 fine. For a second offense, beach-goers will face a $200 fine. Three or more infractions within one year will result in a $500 fine, Kim said.

I actually read this yesterday and I believe they updated the article as it originally said a 1000$ fine. My opinion-- California is obviously in terrible financial shape. If this isn't a grab for cash, I dunno what is. Granted ignoring a lifeguard over safety issues is dumb, I'm fairly certain if I think I'm in danger of getting hit, I'll speak up to the throwers or I'll knife the ball myself. Another reason to not move to CA for me. Complete overkill.

Strangely, the ordinance makes no mention of volleyball or, throwing someone holding a ball or frisbree, (loophole spotted).

I was actually on an LA beach last summer and they do have areas for volleyball though (nets and all). There were only a few though. Why not just have larger parts of the beach designated for object-throwing?

In a time where obesity rules, the only exercise some kids get all year is at the beach and now there are rules in place telling those kids not to partake in thise activies?

They also added digging holes to that list of illegals. A hole can't be deeper than 18 inches, "except when permission is given for film and TV production purposes." My little cousins will be devastated if they can't build their mighty sand forts. That's all they do when we go to the beach. We always make sure they fill them back in before we leave so no one will get hurt.

I can imagine potential safety hazards of really deep holes in the sand but, somebody must have been beaned by a ball at some point for them to rule against that sort of thing.  I can recall when there were fire-rings on the beach for public use, (what can burn when it's all sand?), and then that went away, (probably because some wasted fools torched something that could burn).

At least kids can still build sand castles with 18" moats, eh?

I think you have hit the nail on the head (pun intended).  A politician must have been beamed with a ball.  I lived on the first ring of the Love Canal and one of the streets in our neighborhood was warped to where it felt like it had three speed bumps in a row on it.  When the governor came to check out the contamination his limo drove up that street.  When they rode over the three bumps he bounced up and down so much his dentures popped out.  He immediately ordered that the street be fixed, regardless of the fact he was ordering the neighborhood to be evacuated permanently.

I think I would move to a beach that didn't have such silly rules... the beach if for fun and if throwing a ball if fun for you, you should be able to do it...

Now you know why I moved from California to Oregon, we dig holes 10 feet across and 5 feet deep every 4th of July so we can watch without getting hit by all the illegal fireworks.
