Retirement
« on: March 08, 2012, 05:07:54 pm »
I am looking forward to receiving my first SS Check. I decided to retire at 62, vs 65, or 75 etc. The reason, I am not sure SS will be around much longer. I have spent many years paying into it, whether I wanted to or not, and am not getting half as much out of it as I think one should but that is the game of politicians. Too bad I can't retire at 100% or 90% of what the politicians do.

Hope it is better for future generations, and those with IRA, retirement funds, Pensions, and stock market get slapped like this generation did. I  can only hope the young up and coming can solidify for themselves the American Dream. Have fun FusionCash Members.

I retired at 62 and the added time I had let me develop my Internet skills, which more than made up for the $200 a month more I would have  received by waiting until I reached 65.

That is why I want to get with you for lunch pretty soon. To pick you brain, and hopefully start working for us both to a mutual fun and earning time for us all. Have a great day I do look forward to meeting with you.

I was lucky enough to be able to retire early on a limited income.  I do agree with the fact that Soc Sec may be in trouble, but hopefully there are enough baby boomers coming forward to keep that from happening.

I do agree with Old Buddy though.  I need to start working smarter rather than harder at home and on the net.

If the govt. were to pay back all of the money they have taken from ss, there wouldn't be a problem. They screwed me out of 15 years of paying into ss., My ex and i filed jointly evey year and since we did i did not get a penny of it and i worked my tail off. Plus raised 2 kids. Oh well guess he enjoyed it.

I am not sure I understand what you said. Do you mean you receive nothing even though you and your husband are not not married? Or that you get nothing as you and your husband are married?

I am just not sure is there will even be a Soc Sec by the time I reach 62 and am worried.  The state of the economy is bad and with the prices of things it is better to take a bird in the hand rather than two in the bush.  :bootyshake:

I have been hearing that same old story since I was in High School (mid 1950's), but it's still around and I seriously doubt if it's going anywhere, no matter how bad the government gets. You are talking about a MASSIVE constituency that no half way intelligent politician is going to ignore.

My previous concern has increased considerably since you used the phrase "half way intelligent politician".
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Now I remember why I don't usually participate in political discussions on this forum.

I rarely do either and instead, stick to the much less contentious religious debates & discussions.

I was about 62 and 1/2 when I retired and don't regret it a minute.  I am lucky as I also get a pension.

Well all I can say is that SS continues and the government quits screwing around with it. Too bad they don't get on the same system as us lowly folks, same with medical etc. Perhaps then they would be real careful as to what they do, as I am sure they would not want to screw up there own medical and retirement plans. So why don't they. Why don't the media and social pundits put it to them and see what they say. Or better yet watch them squirm to come up with a good answer

I retired 9 years ago at age 62 from where I worked for years.  I could not take any more of the heavy lifting any more.  I stayed off work alittle over a year and then I had to get out and find a job because I could not live on SS.  I think it is a shame the older people barely are getting by.  May God Bless each of you and keep you safe.
