Some people measure a person's value that way, including their own.  It is something one can get beyond, and often maturity will take care of that.  Confidence and self worth are also effective at removing such insecurities.  I cannot tell from your post whether or not you consider wasteful spending to be "better then everybody" as well, or if you are simply recognizing that the characteristics your friend displays is your indication that you recognize what she is about.  Also, if your friend is inebriated during her spending session then you cannot assume my above classification of her to be precise and must consider that she is simply riding out her high and trying to maximize the simple pleasure of such a state in whatever way she knows how.
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Classic case of "tryna keep up with the Jones's". Some people don't realize that there is a process to everything and want to jump the gun on what it is they can do financially. Don't worry when the lights and water start getting cut off she'll slow down.

Some people are impatient and want everything now.

Some of those could be it. Or she could be like my hubby was. When I met him he had no money. So every time he had money he spent it on the things he wanted. Just for that sudden feeling that he could have what he wanted. People that don't have money normally don't plan long term, because they are just sad that they can't do everything they want. Or most things they want any of the time. Some people are just not good at the understanding that if they save that money it will help them in the long run. They just focus on how happy they can be now, and that people will like some of the new things they can get. It always hurts, until you realize its not going to make you as happy as paying your bills so that you can live where you want. Instead of having what you want right now.

One of my family members is sorta like that, but she's more selfish with her spending.  She will buy packs of cigarettes for herself and then cry that it's winter and she can't pay her bills.  She get's like $700 a month plus food stamps and she lives with her daughter that also gets paid to take care of her mother (which normally you wouldn't get paid to do) and yet they always run out of money by about the 20th of the month.  They will buy a whole pizza, eat a slice, and throw the rest away.  Just a lot of wasteful spending.  And, in her case, she thinks that everyone else should take care of her and will gladly bleed you dry if you let her.  Now, your friend might not be like this, but it's something to look out for.

A lot of it is we live in an instant gratification society.  Many people want things NOW because they can have it now.  Credit card companies, for instance, take advantage of this.  You might not have $1000, but they will let you buy something worth that much.  That's the reason people end up in debt is because they think they 'need' something now or they 'just have to have it.'

I also agree with what others above said.  It could be she's just riding the high, not really thinking about cost.  Or it could be just she's happy to have money so she wants to enjoy having it.

They're totally insecure and believe they can buy friends and status. It's just an illusion and one should never hang their basket higher than they can reach it.

I think it's called, "Fake It 'til You Make It", but with that kind of action they seldom do.

??? Who knows  I guess people just want to feel good about themselves and this is perhaps the wrong way to go about it but people want to be liked and admired.  They just don't understand the right way to go about it.

The economy strives on people who act on their impulses and buys based on their wants than their needs. I know a number of people who place a lot on brand recognition and will buy to show off.

WE LIVE IN AMERICA AND MOST PEOPLE JUDGE US BY OUR WEALTH...PEOPLE ASSUME THAT MONEY REPRESENTS SUCCESS.

That is called trying to keep up with the Jonses and living way beyond her means.  I don't understand people who do crazy things like that.  If you make walmart wages, why are you trying to live the Neiman Marcus lifestyle-it doesn't compute or make sense.

maybe you should have a talk with your friend, the next time you go out make a deal with her, tell her to leave her money at home and see if she has just a good time without it. never know maybe she will be the one getting the free drinks.
