not a rotweiler, how about a beagle puppy.

I raised beagles they are very gentle with children.  Also corky's.

I now have a yorky, and I love her to death.

It all depends on HOW old the boy is.
Animal Planet has excellent summariesw of all the breeds, including what types of dogs are good for what ages and types of families.

I also have a pug, loves to cuddle and always wants to sleep and relax. Not a dog that runs around a lot! I love pugs!

Corgis are very intelligent and good with kids.  Cavaliers are good with kids also.  I think Beagles are gentle but they do like to chase rabbits.

I would say go to the animal shelter after doing some general breed research. Don't pay for a pure bred when there are so many dogs that need homes. I've been a Vet Tech for 6 yrs and have seen many breeds. Regardless of the breed, all dogs have different personalities and can have a bad day but there are some breeds that typically are NOT good for kids: terriers (too hyper and high maintenance), dalmations (same), border collies (great dog but need alot of play time), cocker spaniels (likely to bite/turn on a dime) and even Corgis are known to bite (they bite the Queen of England)...

You need to think about size and activity level. If I were to get a dog right now for my 10 and 6 yr olds it would likely be under 30 pounds, no flattened nose (too many health/breathing issues) and not require alot of training, ie: a mix or, Yorkie, Beagle, Eskie (american eskimo), Mini Schnauzer, Cavalier (expensive though)...
Good luck

Our dog is one we got from the pound and he is a quite a mix.  He is also very good with our grandkids both baby and teenager.  He is a short dog and minds really good.  His only bad thing is that he sheds worse than any dog I have ever seen.  Good luck finding a good dog for your son.

Go to an animal shelter and see what they have in the way of puppies or young adult dogs. If you do have a particular breed in mind check out online for breed rescue. Hopefully there will be a place for your child to interact with the dog before you take it home. Remember how big the breed will get as an adult when picking out a puppy.

I too think that you should go to the pound  with your son and check out the dogs there.  Make sure to brin your son to make sure both boy and dog get along well.  Also remember that it will be you doing most of the work, no matter how well intentioned your son maybe, and that it is  a till death do you part responsability.  Good Luck and may you find a forever friend for your son that will make both boy and dog happy for many years to come.

I think the local pound is a great place to go.
Growing up the best dog we had was a black lab He was very protective of children and very lovable.
Good luck in your search.  :peace:
