The key here is not put someone on a diet but to change their diet.

I never had children but children have to be guided and it's the parents' responsibility to feed them the correct foods. Yes you'll always get the ones who won't eat certain "things" but that's okay. And never ever make them eat everything on their plates. So in answer to your question...yes obese children should be put on a diet. But, it's better if they don't become obese in the first place. Proper foods, exercise and rest...the 3 basics are still the best way to go. Hence that old saying "if it's not broke...don't fix it".

I think all children, regardless of their weight should have parents that are making sure they are eating a healthy diet.  In my area, I see this all the time:  Parents are too busy to feed their kids healthy.  They rush them in somewhere before school and grab them a couple of doughnuts and a soda or hot chocolate for breakfast and then grab them a juice and some cookies (or crackers) and tell them that is for lunch and sometimes they will get them a candy bar for after school.  Just because a kid is skinny doesn't mean all that sugar is good for them.  Sugar isn't healthy for anyone no matter what their age...period.  (It's like some parents here think sugar is one of the four food groups!)

Another trend that the parents with kids in "after school activities' like to do is get their kids a "monster" drink (because it has vitamins and so must be "healthy") and encourage the kids to eat a "protein" bar with it and call it "dinner".  They spend $7-$9 on a Monster and a "protein" bar (with just as much sugar as a soda & candy bar) and at $7-$9 they could of had a REAL meal at a restaurant if they didn't have the time to cook at home.

if I have a kid that's overweight first step would be to get him on a fruit and vegetable diet. meat a few times a week. I would also try and get him to  exercise. The only time I see fat kids is when there parents are even fatter. It's sad really

I think they need to learn how and why the body uses food for energy and what are good choices and poor ones.  Some "garbage" foods once and a while won't kill them, but they definitely need to "burn" what they are eating!  It's one thing a kid getting a little pudgy before a growth spurt.  It's another thing when they fit into the obese category before they are 7!!  We want to set them up for success!!!

Parents should definitely feed their kids a healthy diet and make sure they are getting enough exercise. It is part of being a loving parent. Most kids that are over weight have parents that are over weight though. It goes to show that if you are not taking care of yourself than you won't be taking care of your kids.

Moms shouldn't let their kids become obese in the first place...hello!

I would think that this is one issue that we would all agree on.  Not only should the put their kid on a diet but anyone who doesn't think so is just someone I can't see eye to eye with at all.

I agree with what a few other people have stated on here...

I think parents should have their children eating healthy foods from the start. If you get then to enjoy eating healthy at a young age, they will probably keep doing it as they grow up.
My mom hated cooking, so she always gave us junk and fast food, so that is what I grew up eating. Now, I'm 21 and changing my lifestyle to a more healthy one, but it took 21 years to get there.

I think that 'parents' should be in control (and be responsible) in providing a healthy and nutritious diet from day one...before a child becomes obese.  I think that a parent should also follow this diet and provide a positive role model for their children not only in a healthy diet but in a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of excercise.  Obesity could be for a number of reasons and perhaps the child isn't obese but just needs to grow into their weight.  If the child has been following a healthy diet and excercise regimen, it is important that you consult your child's doctor before letting your judgement of obesity affect your child's life.

I believe they should... Because the child or children will have a hard time dealing with their condition up until they grow up. If we truly care.. we should always go for the common good. I had a cousin that was near to being obese and he had a hard time doing school activities plus all the mental and emotional traumas he had to suffer at school when his classmates bully him....

I agree with the response from plennis.  Absolutely no.  If a child is given a healthy and balance diet then whatever adjustments their bodies go through is also healthy.  And yes, there are too many adults today that have weight and psychological issues stemmed from adults in their young lives that concentrated on weight.  If a child is eating a health diet and getting normal childhood play which is more than enough exercise - children are active, and has obvious weight issues then it is probably medical and should be checked.
