Dog Food

What kind of dog food do you buy?

After years of just trying to save money, I finally stopped going for the cheap Beneful (first ingredient corn) and switched to Rachel Ray's Nutrish (first ingredient meat). At first our dog HATED it but see his problem, he's a fatty, he LOVES to eat. So it was really because we took the corn away. We tried different flavors and my very very overweight dog started to shed the pounds then I saw the turkey healthy weight and man is it doing the trick, he's down at least 10 pounds.

I usually go with cheap or generic on a lot of things but it's official, Rachel Ray's dog food is right up there with buying toilet paper - quality matters!

My dog eats home cooked meals because after many months of alternating back & forth between different "premium" dog foods and home cooked and seeing the benefits of home cooked first hand, it was the only option.  My yellow lab also has food allergies and can't have any form of corn, and can't have beef more than once a week.  I buy "Back to Basics" dry dog food to put in one of her toys, she has to work to get it out and it keeps her busy...it's used more as a "treat" than a meal.  "Back to Basics" has a pork formula, a duck formula and is good for dogs with food allergies.  It's made from nutrient dense organ meat, she seems to like it.

If anyone is interested in learning more about the benefits of home cooking for their pets, there's an on-line site for a holistic vet...I've been making his recipes for my dog (along with my own personal recipes) for about ten years now and they're easy to do and he's really great.  (He'll be having a book coming out about cooking for cats which I can't wait to get.)  I'm not an "affiliate" or anything, I'm just crazy about the vet because he's had a big part in keeping my pets healthy & happy.    Here's the link to his site: http://www.drbasko.com/site/

It is really hard to know for sure which dog food is the healthiest, with the best ingredients for the dogs and yet staying within your budget. But I often times look at having the dogs is like having the kids, they need to eat. So far my dogs will only eat Pedigree small crunchy bites. I often times will add a can of the wet dog food to give them an extra boost in the vitamin category. But trying to find a decent price of "healthier" canned food is hard at times as well. My vet suggested to give them a half a cup of plain yogurt once a week. Not all dogs like it, but worth a shot.

I get my dogs food at the dollar store. I know it's not of the best quality, but it's all we can afford (which honestly it's getting expensive too). We also get our "food" from the dollar store, so it's not like we're eating good food and my dogs are getting 'bottom of the barrel'. We are just really that low on funds, all the time. So none of us get any of the appropriate foods we should be eating.  :sad1:

We use Blue Buffalo dog food, our dogs seem to enjoy eating it and it is healthy.
