Making your own bread from scratch...
« on: November 10, 2012, 06:24:56 pm »
a relative of mine used to make homemade bread
and i never forgot the amazing taste. after recently
acquiring a bread maker from a very nice co-worker of mine,
i looked up some recipes and started with traditional
white bread. the results were wonderful!

what the heck have i been eating in those plastic bags
from the store?! this stuff is amazing! i love discovering
new things, and homemade bread is no exception

(it even makes the butter taste twice as good!)
[ we all have a place in history. mine is in the clouds. ]

Sounds grreeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttt!!!! I make a few kinds of bread. Purchased some yeast from the Shoprite the other day so I could make some Grits Bread. Love making two ingredient breads as well, like ice cream and flour. Let me go make some bread now and eat it while I do a survey!

I just had to Google Grits bread.  I can't believe I'm from the South and have never heard of it before.  What does it taste like?

I infrequently make sub rolls.

I was thinking the other day the next time I am at the thrift store I was going to look for a bread maker.  Several years ago my bf and I bought one from the thrift store and it worked great.  My mother never made homemade bread but his mother did so he wanted one.  We made bread in it a few times and it was good.  We moved and it was left behind.

I grew up on a farm with 12 siblings. Every saturday we made buns, they were delicious but somehow moving to the city I cant get the same results.

I used to make homemade bread yonks ago. This posting has inspired me to get off my lazy butt and do it again! Nothing tastes quite as good as a slice of homemade bread (still piping hot) with butter! Thank you for this posting and the yummy memories!!   :notworthy:

I'm from Florida, but I cooked "these" dishes up north. Depends on which one I make. When I was much younger, my roommate and I were very poor. We never wasted any food. So if we had leftover hot cereal, we kept it and turned it into pancakes, meatloaf, bread etc. We also were always running out of ingredients, so we added other items. Grits are corn so we added them to corn bread. Taste like cornbread, looks a little less yellow. Cooked grits never worked as bread with baking powder so we added yeast. Grits don't add much to the taste, just the texture.

I used to make bread after I got home after working 8 hours.  Lots of mixing and kneading by hand, and finally would get the loaves out of the oven at l0 o'clock at night, just in time to go to bed.  I did get a bread maker after I got older, but the bread was so good, I put on way too much weight.  It is now sitiing on the shelf gathering dust ;D

Love making bread! :) I usually prefer to make bread from wheat flour, or a combination of multi-purpose and wheat flour together. I use my bread machine at least 1-2 times a week. I also love adding toasted white sesame seeds. I have in mind to bake zucchini herb bread this week.

bread makers are amazing, I haven't used mine in along time.  I seem to think I don't have the time...?????  I think I will get  it out tomorrow.  Another great item to have is a pressure cooker.  I can cook a whole froze chicken in 30 minutes.  Combine these to items and imaginge the awesome reslults.

I used to only make the occasional sweetbreads - like banana or zucchini.  But this year I've added cranberry nut bread to that list - yummy!

I also started making my own wheat bread this past summer.  When store bough bread upped to $3 in my area, I thought it was time to start trying to make my own just to cut down on costs.  I found the best, easiest honey wheat bread recipe on Allrecipies and have been making that once a month (one batch makes 3 loaves).  Best wheat bread ever!  I bought a loaf of store bought bread once about a month ago, and it tasted like air to me after eating the homemade bread.  Not only am I now saving money, but I'm eating healthier bread.  I also find I'm not eating as much bread since I switched over.

I taught one of my sisters how to make it and all of her kids love the wheat bread recipe too - she said she even had one who didn't like bread crust who will eat all of this homemade bread.

I'm guessing, as food costs continue to increase, people will probably start going back to making their own stuff - if for no other reason than keeping costs down.

I'm currently researching how to make homemade noodles now...   ;D

Tend to each too much because it is so good.  I make a cinnamon raisin yeast bread during the holidays that is really good.  However it is time consuming.  I don't have a breadmaker so takes a little longer.
