I like music esp. rock and heavy metal, but after I became a karaoke DJ, I tried to listen to all sorts of genres so that I'd know what people were talking about when making requests or needed help in finding a song. When I first started, I made the mistake of playing Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight" when some little girl (I'm guessing about 10) requested "the 'Tonight, Tonight' song" at a wedding. I was actually amazed that she even heard of the Smashing Pumpkins, let along that song which would've came out before she was born, but being at a wedding with 20-30 year olds, I thought she may have just been a younger sister and had heard it from their elder sibling. Boy was I wrong when my partner told me after the wedding that the girl was probably referring to Hot Chelle Rae's song "Tonight, Tonight" which was on the charts at that time. After that I've tried to listen to all sorts of genres and have found that I'm more open to them... I seem to actually like many different genres, but it might be a particular song that I dislike.
I also think it depends on the mood that I'm in that determines what type of genre I want to listen to.... After a hard day at work when I'm really frustrated and / or stressed, I like listening to loud heavy metal; there's almost a cathartic experience in releasing all of that raw emotion through that style of music. But when I'm DJ'ing, I tend to go more for pop music, esp. dance style like Pitbull or David Guetta. And then on long road trips, I like to listen to 70's and 80's rock (which is what I grew up on) with a smattering of adult contemporary and country (the new, upbeat country, that is, since I think that that sounds a lot like classic rock).
