In light of the recent tragedy at Lone Star College near Houston Texas (see http://www.usnews.com/news/newsgram/articles/2013/04/09/mass-stabbing-reported-at-houston-area-community-college), I propose that the federal legislature pass a bill that would limit blades on weapons to only 1-foot in length, limit replacement blade packs to hold only 5 blades (for knives such as box cutters and X-Acto knives the latter of which was used in the attack mentioned above), and institute a national background check on all individuals purchasing knives from licensed dealers, internet sales, and knife shows.

Furthermore, since we know that bats and mauls have the capacity to seriously injure and possibly cause death, I also think that a similar bludgeoning weapons control be passed. I understand that there may be an uphill battle against the powerful MLB Lobby esp. since this might mean that players like Ugueth Urbina (member of the Philadelphia Phillies convicted of attempted murder) may not be allowed to be in possession of such weapons. Perhaps also institute some age restrictions as well or at least bans youths under 10 and require those 10 years and up to participate in bat safety courses.

I was wondering if anyone other than moi thought the same things!! I think we need to start a grass roots efforts to deal with this, and of course we must include hammers in the banned objects as they are by far and away used in homicides over ALL fire arms!!

I'm glad that you caught my use of hyperbole to the whole gun-control debate. After I had posted this, I mentioned that same thing to a friend of mine and he pointed out how people can kill others by the use of their bare hands (choking, snapping their neck, etc.). And we got to thinking of the ramifications of that, like requiring people to be granted a conceal-and-carry permit if you wished to walk down the street with their hands in their pockets, mittens, or other forms of concealment.  :BangHead:

Somewhere in the far reaches of my memory I seem to recall something about two brothers, Cain and Abel... but hold on, that might bring something like morality into the picture... can't have that now, some folks have pretty much wiped out all sense of moral anythings...

could we just be reaping what we have sown? YIKES

I think you are forgetting some serious items... maglights, hammers, crowbars, tire irons, and lead pipes. Clearly we need some sort of ban that addresses the user (or should I say mis-user) of such objects. If only there were laws about people's behavior, hmmm. No, I think it is better to blame the object.

Ok, I see what you did.

Just one thing, though..in this 'mass stabbing' incident, how many people died?

Man, I'm really lovin' this thread!  Just LOOK at all the items that would need "banned" if the powers that be meant to ban them all.  Like someone else here mentioned, PEOPLE can use their HANDS/FINGERS to kill you.  Just imagine in the near future when you're lining up for your MICROCHIP... in goes the chip, then, CHOP!, off come your FINGERS because some a$$ decided that YOU (the mere pee-on) didn't need them anymore because they cause the rest of society a "problem," which leads me to yet another problem we have - our politicians and their struggles to think clearly.  I think we need to be open to MENTAL EVALUATIONS FOR ANYONE WANTING TO RUN FOR ANY OFFICE.  Washington, DC has turned in to the biggest asylum known to man.  They want to put "labels" on anyone and anything some nut finds "offensive."  Get over it - in this world there are ALL kinds of people and ALL kinds of things.  You can't please everybody but, this doesn't give them the right to take away my God given Rights.  You want 'em - COME TAKE THEM!

My husband and I joke about this all the time.  Last year when there were stabbings in the news (like the nanny that stabbed the children she was watching), I made the comment that no one ever says we need to ban knives.  Or keep knives out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Thanks for this!

never understood the banning of switchblade knives either!! They are pretty handy for those that only have one hand, and there are a lot of times even with both hands they are very useful if one hand is say holding on to the wire that needs to be cut on a BOMB or somehthing... anyway, now they make great pocket knives that are designed to be opend with one hand, just as 'dangerous' and 'quick' as any switchblade so allowing the switchblades makes no real difference.

I guess, as with banning 'assault rifles' it is really only a matter of making the pansy types feel good about something but in no way makes anything any safer or better. Just my thoughts on it...

Good post.  I'm amazed how many people don't understand that all that banning anything will do is cause good people who obey the law to not have the item that's banned and those who don't care about the law to have them.  Yes, certain things shouldn't be available for purchase by anyone just by running to my local Walmart, but banning things generally doesn't accomplish anything.

I mean, in school, they told us we weren't suppose to have cell phones to prevent cheating and so we'd pay attention in class.  So, we were suppose to leave them in our lockers.  Guess what, those who didn't want to get in trouble left them in their locker and those who didn't care kept them in their pencil cases and used them during class anyway.

Plus, I mean, a chainsaw, while big and loud, can cause far more damage than a simple knife and yet you can run to Home Depot and pick up one, or 50, of those no problem.  Pick up one of my 400 page hard cover books and I'm sure that could do some damage.  Even better, baseball pitchers can throw a ball rather fast, surely that will cause pain.  I mean, why don't we just ban peanuts cause some people are deathly allergic to them and they can go into shock by simply being in a room with someone who ate a peanut in the past week.  I even read a thing a bit back about people putting some kind of household chemical (don't remember it but like ammonia) and tin foil in a bottle and how that can cause an explosion.  If we go around banning things cause they could be used to kill/injury someone, we're gonna be left with nothing.
