Like some of the others have said, you should definitely pack food to go with you. It might even be a little healthier than stopping places all the time to eat.

I didn't think of an entertainment book, thanks for the idea. I did see that you can get admission tickets for Williamsburg on Groupon.

We take as many snacks as we can find room for - bag of apples, bunch of bananas, crackers, pretzels, jar of peanut butter and if we can take a cooler we take bottles of water and juice, cheese sticks etc. Costs too much to use convenience stores and or gas stations or vending machines at rest stations.

When getting food, go to the bulk warehouse food stores and pickup sandwich fixings and bread. This along with an Ice Chest will save lots of money just in food.

Avoid buying snacks and drinks at every pitstop/gas stop.

We take a cooler along for our water and drinks.
Having fun snacks along for the kids is also a big help.  Something out of the ordinary for them is a treat to them.

When you cross a state line, look for a visitor center.  These are usually located on a primary interstate or highway within the first few miles.  Often you can get coupon books, free maps, and other information at no cost about things to do and see in that state.

FYI: I went and checked out the entertainment book.  It is $5 but you have to sign up for annual renewal and it doesn't tell you what the cost will be next year.  I then checked out reviews and almost everyone said canceling the annual renewal was extremely difficult.  Someone also said that the entertainment book filed for bankruptcy in March of this year.

Think I will stick to the coupons at the visitors' centers.
