Although I had never heard of it before, apparently it does exist.  It's called a "Frenulectomy."  See link:

I have never heard of someone having their tongue clipped because of a speech impediment.  I feel sympathy for the child.  I hope she does grow out of it. ??? :o ???

I have heard of it, but I wonder if it is really necessary. My son had speech therapy for years. It really helped a lot. We started around the time he was 4, but probably should have at 3. My SIL said her daughter should have started sooner, too. She had so much fluid in her ears that it sounded like she was under water. It took years for her to overcome it. She still sounds a little strange at times.

Has any one ever heard of a 18 year old (girl) having a sudden speech impairment. I was driving in my car with a 18 year old young lady friend, she was on the phone when I heard her mention the word "studdering" ( yes I know it's spelled wrong, don't know how to spell check here yet. But that's another topic). She then developed a speech impairment. We we're talking later when she apologized for her impairment. I took that opportunity to discuss the matter. She said she had had this problem during high school years and the school officials thought her to be faking. I am not on earth to judge others, I am just wondering has any one heard of this before.

Maybe it happens when she uses a certain part of her brain? In this case, a part of her brain that she uses less frequently than other parts. When she uses it, the problem occurs? Otherwise, I would have asked you if she had an injury or if she had a stroke or blood clot.

My brother had to have the skin clipped under his toungue. He was in the first grade when a doctor said it needed to be done and after a few months he was talking just fine. But before the kids called him tommy the tounge tied towboy. I got into a lot of trouble fighting with those that teased him. But even now would not trade him for anything.

I think speech therapy should be a first step rather than a surgery. I don't know all the details but I would look at less invasive options first and like some have said the child may still grow out of it. And for any surgery I would suggest getting more than one opinion from a doctor so they can be sure to take the best possible route to help the kid.
