As long as your son knows there is a difference between reality and fiction, there is nothing wrong with him playing video games.

My sons are 8 and 6 and they are game heads too, especially the 8 year old. He's at home, you know where he is, and I think the strategy and problem solving skills that go into becoming proficient at these games can be good for them.  As the previous commenter stated, as long as he knows the difference between fiction and reality he should be fine. I recently implemented a time frame for my sons. As long as he has his priorities straight I see no problem with it and now you have a way to punish him that will surely hit where it hurts lol Take away a boy's Xbox or PS3 or Wii and they act like it's the end of the world.

My grandson is 5.  He likes to play games on my Kindle Fire.  I play games on my laptop.  I see nothing wrong with it.  He was in Kindergarten last year and is on his way to 1st grade, so I don't see where it makes a difference.  Your son may be a video gamehead, as you assert, but he may make a career out of it. The designer of video games have become a lucrative career choice.

you should tell him to turn it into a productive hobby like making a blog about his video playing so it wont seem like such a waste of time.

Before you make that decision you should read up on the work of Jane McGonigal as well as how gamers are better adjusted and tend to be more intelligent. There are plenty of games that include exercise if that is your real concern.   http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kate-gale/can-gamers-save-the-world_b_2703638.html

Only if time spent playing is drastically negatively affecting various areas of his life. Video games don't deserve the bad rap they get!

Video games are super addictive. I can play grand theft auto for hours and hours. You've just got to make sure there's balance.

maybe just encourage other activites as well and make sure he is doing that homework. Some games depending on what it is can encourage learning, but some can encourage bad behavioral traits to, just make sure he has an even balance at least of other things.
