Call the United States Postal Service and request a pack of boxes.  They give them away free.  I requested 2 sets and received them.  The toll-free number is 800-275-8777. A set is five boxes.   Hope it helps.

Walmart sells the, uhm, 24 x 18 x 18 boxes for 1.39 USD. They have slightly smaller ones for cheaper, too.

Do not buy any shipping boxes. Go to Walmart when they are opening pallet boards. See what you need and grab them. Make sure they have brand names printed on them. Do not take any boxes with "Walmart" printed on them because they belong to the store.

You can also go to your local post office, some keep them out in the lobby and you can pick your size, or if they are not out, just ask. They have different sizes to choose from too. I try to grab one every time I stop at the post office so I always have a few different sizes handy if I need one. I have never tried calling to get them, but I might do that next time to see how it works too.

Don't forget to check the free section of craigslist or post a wanted ad on there.

You can also walk into the Post Office to get the free shipping boxes and envelopes instead of calling the number if that is more convenient.

Have you tried your grocery stores, Walmart or any other places you shop at. Usually they will tell you when they crush all of their boxes. Each store has a different time they do this process, so it is best to check with a store employee. Good Luck with your search.

You can also order USPS boxes online.  I always use liquor store boxes when I'm moving because they are so sturdy.

You could stop by your local supermarket and ask for boxes and they'll be happy to give you some for free, since they recycle their boxes anyway.
