Using a hot spot for internet service
« on: July 28, 2013, 07:15:59 am »
If using a hot spot for internet connection, are you able to do FC while away from home? Instead of hooking onto the hotel or someone else's internet, if I use a hot spot am I OK for doing FC? Am going to be gone for business this week and now have a hot spot and just wondered if I would be ok or still don't do fc while away from home? Thanks for any and all help with this!

I don't know enough about computers to really be positive, but I don't think you can use a hot spot system. FC identifies users by their IP address, but when you connect to a different Internet connection your IP shifts.

My normal hookup is wireless and the IP changes every time I use it so that is why I am thinking a hotspot might work.

The primary reason to NOT using a hot spot, is that you can't be sure that another FC user has ever used it or will use it in the future.

Remember: one FC member per IP address.

That's why you should not use public computers including hot spots.  They are all public IP's and you have no idea who's been using it.

Your wireless hookup is probably unique to you (at least I hope it is).

My hotspot is a secure hotspot - must have code to use it. I have had other people try to hook onto it and they can't unless I give them the password/code.

Wow this is a good question.  I went on vacation to MO and used their internet connect to do my daily and FC never said anything.  What, does everyone just forget FC while away from home???? God Bless

I'm not familiar with this type of hotspot.  Closest I've come is being able to use Verizon's Hot Spots in their limited locations (never did, since none were available where I was).  It all goes back to one member to one ISP.  If your secure hot spot is just yours, you may be okay; but if you are one of many customers who also have the same password or even their own, then you are taking a chance.

Better to address this question to Support and provide them with the particulars of your hot spot service and let them figure it out.

With wireless and electronic services expanding the way it is, the issues that FC is trying to protect itself from become more and more difficult.

This is a question that I was wondering as well the past couple weeks.  Later in the future I may be moving from my house and I may have to stay in an apartment or something like that.  I'm really not to sure how the internet works at an apartment, but I believe the entire complex is shared.  So I was thinking maybe if I make my phone my personal hotspot I shouldn't run into any problems with the IP address.  Not sure if this is allowed or not, but I figured I will contact support once I do move.
