what cops have authority to pull you over?
« on: September 14, 2013, 10:52:23 pm »
I am just wondering what cops can pull you over to give you a ticket? I know local and state police for sure!!! But there are a lot more police like forest preserve, conservation police, community service police can they pull you over? I am just wondering because I have never seen them pull anyone over and just wanted to know if they have the authority to?

It depends on where you are/where you're driving - State police generally manage the Highways, which is why sometimes you'll see other officers (local/county) driving fast and not seem to be interested in the speed of drivers. Believe it or not, police officers can actually get in trouble for pulling someone over if it's not in their jurisdiction, etc. I also had an officer tell me that he doesn't always turn his lights on when going to a scene b/c it can sometimes create more panic - he just weaves in and out of traffic at high speeds. He also told me that he's been ticketed in his police car for going through a red light (camera). So - message is (I guess), don't always assume anything about officers you see driving on the roads...

I think any type of law enforcement can stop you if they have a reason.

I think it is safe to say that ANY 'officer' that is entrusted to keep order over a given area can legitimately enforce all the codes, statutes, laws and rules that pertain to their duty. In many places even private security firms can issue traffic tickets, I know because I live in a community that has that type of 'service'.

Real hard to give an accurate answer because it seems every location has different rules... ;D

It seems as if anyone can pull you over for anything. All civil rights seem to have been thrown out the window.  A trumped up suspicion of wrong doing leaves you presumed guilty until proven innocent and subject to everything you own being searched and or confiscated.  The news is ripe with stories about innocent people having their telephone conversations/e-mails listened to/read.  Other stories are told of people being taken from their residences for a trip to Cuba.  I was pulled over for doing nothing last week other than driving after midnight on my way home from work.  I took out my iphone and recorded the whole thing. The police office thought I was speeding until I showed him the video tape.  It was an excuse to pull anyone over in order to determine if they might have been drinking and an infringement on my time.

I believe that ever since the inception of The Patriot Act, any Officer of the Law can pull you over, even if they're not an Officer in your part of town or city.
