Who's good with Chemistry?
« on: October 15, 2013, 06:31:54 pm »
I'm not...

Ughhhh! i have my midterm for chem next week and I have no clue what to do. -__- I havent
learned a single thing in that class because she's really not much of a lecturer. On top of that the TA's
methods of helping aren't to my needs.. :'( Terrified

^E=mc^2 is a physics thing.... not chemistry I believe

If I were you, I would drop out of the course.... It's too late for you, even if you have a chemistry tutor teaching you...If you are confused on how things are (especially with the introduction part of chem), you will struggle throughout the semester... If you stay and flunk the midterm you have a long road to get your grade high (unless ur teacher curves or drop the lowest test grade) because you have to learn the basics and also keep up with the lectures... Happen to me once in Physics due to an adjunct teacher, should've dropped it but I didn't :crybaby2:... Retook the course with a better professor (and put in more effort) and got a high B

Other options

-Go to ur college's tutoring center and "live there" (use up all their available hours), think about nothing except Chemistry for the entire week.. I dunno about ur college but some tutors won't bother helping you if you have no idea where to start.
-There might be someone in your class who retake the class so ask them what the layout and questions that might be on the exam
-There is a slim but possible chance that someone in the class might have the answers to midterms (you'll be surprise, but it does happen in college)
-If you are able to have a cheat sheet, by god fill that paper up with example problems and pray

The only thing I know about chemistry is adding/subtracting electrons (valence shell stuff), periodic table and some atomic weights addition, and how to turn a base/acid to a base/acid.... But that was in HS  :dontknow:... Thank god I don't have to take it in Electrical Engineering Tech.

Overall advice from a fellow college student

Drop out the class and find a better professor at http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/.... Might be the student's fault but some Professors are just bad... Might receive a small part of your tuition if you drop sooner.. BUT think about it and weight your options, if you think you can pass the course and you study like a god than all the luck to you!  :)

I majored in Chem, so I guess I'm pretty good at it (although I haven't stayed in that area of study for the last decade or more). But I'd have to agree with LiquidFire about seeing if you can drop it... Unfortunately Chemistry is one of those subjects that tend to build on top of what was (supposedly) already learned. Do you have a specific question or section in your class that you are struggling with the most?

Too bad you don't live in the Lexington, KY area.  My daughter teaches chemistry at a high school in Lexington.  She does special tutoring for high school and college students.  She has a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Masters in Education and will be starting back to school in two weeks to get her Doctorate in Mathematics.  Not the type of doctor she started out to be but all will work out great in the end.  I do know from her experience in school, the professor or TA can make a big difference in what you get out of the class.
Have a wonderful day!

mmy sympathies. I'm bad chemistry too. You might consider getting tutoring, otherwise, there's a good book called Holt Science spectrum it does a good job of teaching chemistry basics such is balancing equations. I wish you luck.

Sorry. I think you should ask some of your classmates to get together in a study group. Most of the times I buried my pride and asked the smartest kids in the classroom if they can share some notes during study group, then I will treat them lunch or something but those were my college days. Somehow, it is difficult to learn things about chemistry and math. But they almost work hand in hand. Try a tutor the university should have one available. Good luck!

I only had a year of Chemistry in high school, so all I vaguely recall as the basics.  I was a Physics major, so if you end up taking that, I'd be glad to help.

For the rest of your semester - is there more than one TA for the class?  If so, find out when the other TAs have their sessions and ask if you can attend.  I recall my intro Physics lectures were large so they had 3-4 TAs to handle everyone.  My first semester I had a dud of a TA too.  One of the girls on my dorm floor was in my same class and had a different TA who she said was awesome, so I went to her discussion and found out she was right, and asked her TA if it was okay if I sat in.  The TA had no problems with that.  I still went to my session so I could get my attendance checked, but checking out the other TAs was a good move as I found someone who could actually teach and explain stuff.

The suggestions of getting a study group together is another good idea.  I did that as I started to get to know the same people in my classes over the years.

Thank you. Yes I stopped going to my discussion class with my TA because I don't like the way he has us practice what we learn.
