Can't hold out any longer on a Dishwasher
« on: November 26, 2013, 12:06:31 pm »
I bought a Gibson 20 years ago because it was all I could afford. Even with half the plastic buttons that fell off over the years, the broken upper arm and now the spring in the door busting 2 months ago (keeps the door from "crashing" and practically killing anyone standing in front of it, I can no longer hold off on getting a new one. I am glad, though, because this thing was so noisy when in use that you had to yell when it was running.

Anyway, i'm going nuts with reviews and brands. I have it narrowed down to 4 today, a Whirlpool, Bosche, Kitchen Aid (my very first one was a KA), and a Maytag. I have to laugh at reviews, though. One person will love a brand to death and someone else will hate it with a passion.

Wish me luck that I choose a good one. It will probably be the last one I ever buy. Hubby is putting some $$ towards it because (horrors of horrors!) my birthday is coming up next month (yuk!).

Good luck on your adventure of trying to pick out the best.  I've always had GE dishwashers and they do a good job but I have found they are louder than some on the market.  I replaced my old GE almost 3 yrs ago when we remodeled our kitchen and the new one is not near as loud as the old one was and I was very relieved to discover that.  My sister has all LG appliances and she's been happy with those.  There's so many on the market it makes for a hard decision.  Again, good luck!

Good luck, I know it can be overwhelming with all the brands.  I just bought a new one about 6 months ago.  I got a GE and I love it!  It cleans great and is super quiet.  I don't remember the model, but it was in the middle towards the higher end.  I didn't want the cheapest but I also didn't want the most expensive.  Just go online to stores in your area and the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes.  You can get their prices and compare models and prices on line.  Saves you tons of time running from store to store.

I got a Bosch a year ago and love it. It is very quiet and I love the way it loads. The top rack even a section that flips down for wine glasses. The downside about Bosches is that they tend to be a little smaller(the tubs). Not and issue for me since there is only the 2 of us.

Ratings are a usefull tool but as you mentioned they can drive you crazy.

I really miss haveing a dishwasher, but i don't mind washing the dishes by hand. It is easier then fighting with huby about the way he would load one. Besides it is quite time for me. Gives me time to think without having to listen to the tv. I would rather do them then have him do them also.

Since I don't have one now, I can't recommend one.  But going over the reviews is a good idea.  Also check Consumer Reports.  Good Luck

Good luck on your search.  I find reading the 4-star reviews tend to give me the best perspective on products like this (sometimes 3-star ones too).  Those reviews tend to list both pros and cons from their perspective which give you an idea of possible issues others have with the item, then you can decide if the issue is an important one to you or not.

Good luck on your new dishwasher.  I am in the market for a new one.  I purchased a GE about four years ago and it hasn't held up very well.  I also bought a GE stove at the same time and have had nothing but trouble with it since I purchased it.  I use to be a big GE fan but I won't buy any more of their products.
Have a wonderful day!

Oh I'm so envious! :)  The house we are renting has a teensie tiny kitchen, so there is no place for a dishwasher, not even one of those little counter top ones. I miss having a dishwasher.

Good luck on finding a good dishwasher, my dish washer broke a good while back and I may get one soon. I am one of a few people that I know that don't mind washing dishes by hand.

Can't you get one of those portable dishwashers? My first one was a Kitchen Aid because after we bought our first house, there was no room for a built-in. I kept the DW in the laundry room (next to the kitchen) in a corner and just rolled it out. It served it's purpose and had a butcher block top on it, too, so it served 2 purposes.  ;D

My decision is partially made. LOL

I spent that past 2 days comparing and came down to 3 brands: Bosche, Maytag and Kitchen Aid. I was all set to buy a Whirlpool on sale at $399 until I compared it to the other 3. I have a Whirlpool washer bought in the 90s and love it. This was based on features, price, and reviews.

Now I'm going to make myself crazy because I forgot all about Sears! I have never had a problem with Sears Coldspot OR Kenmore line. I have a Coldspot chest freezer from the '70s  and a Coldspot upright freezer from the '50s that are still going strong and a Kenmore dryer from the 90s and love that, too.

Certain Kenmore appliances are also rated the best by Consumer Reports for years, although I no longer subscribe to their magazine. So...off to see Sears.  ;D
