Tips on staying focused
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:09:33 pm »
I have a big problem.

I can't stay focused. I get distracted really easily and totally forget about what should be done. Or I get too lazy to do things and then I end up not doing anything.

Do you guys have any tips on how to stay focused on whatever things that needs to be done?

It's easy to get distracted if I have to do something important I try to do it right away. Sometimes if I have to pay a bill soon i'll find the bill and put it where I can see it reminding me that it's there.

Maybe you could try getting rid of distractions around you when, hey I got a duck for Christmas, I want some fudge, there is a car turning in my driveway, what in the world is on tv...oh wait.  Maybe I am not the best one to answer this. :D

A couple things I do is use lists and "timing" mechanisms to break down tasks into smaller "chunks" of work.

The lists I make for the day/week/month - basically a list of items I need/want to accomplish.  I have them handy so when I get distracted, I look at the list and find the item I need to get done most and re-focus on that task.

The timing mechanisms help break longer tasks down into smaller/shorter targets where it's easier to focus completely for the short amount of time, then break to do something else.  An example is if I need to wash dishes or clean a room, what I may do is watch a recorded TV show, then instead of fast forwarding through the commercials, I'll use the commercials as my timer to work on the task - see how many dishes I can wash or clean a section of a room in the 4 minutes; then go back to the TV show after the commercials.  Then when the show is over, the cleaning task is often complete as well.

Make yourself a list so you can stay on track.
My daughter has the same issue And I find
That making her a list helps.

I have the same problems but refuse to go on medication for my concentration issues. I find that the more something interests me, the more I can concentrate. I try to fill my life and studies with things that interest me.

If you can take out the distraction if that's possible. Block it out whatever it takes. Then try to relax how ever you can. Last but not least focus on your task. Best advice i could think of right now
