shop when there is a sale.  i rarely buy bacon because it is too expensive..it is a treat, once in a while to have a blt.  the best place to get meat is at a butcher shop and get the monthly freezer special. and just wait when the minmum wage goes up to 10.10 an hour, the prices will rise again.  sales and coupons, it's the only way to feed your family anymore :bad:

Just a side note, food prices have gone through the roof for everyone, interestingly the Administration refuses to take food cost into account when touting the inflation rate, nor calculate this into benefit adjustments...

What administration?  The government?  The government cannot afford to give people more food stamps.
There are too many people drawing them.  Our money is already worthless.  There has to be a line drawn somewhere.  They can't just keep giving more and more to people who do not work.  The people on disability and welfare who do nothing get more money than people who work.  IF a person is truly disabled then I can see them drawing disability but it should only be enough for housing and electricity.  No extras.  I know that offends people.  Probably a lot on here because I am realizing more and more that a lot of people on these sites are drawing disability but the fact is if no one is entitled to internet, cable, entertainment, and all the extras.  People who work cannot afford them so the people who are living off of the ones who work should not have them either.

And the more in the hole the economy goes and the harder it is to find work and the less jobs pay the more people say screw it and refuse to even try to find a job or work and just try to get disability or a government check.  We cannot keep going the way we are.  I just don't see why people do not see that.

My husband and I just eat once a day because we get food stamps and that all the food it allows us to eat once a day.  We only have one income which isn't enough SSI pays 721.00 a month and I can't work  so the only thing we can do is cut back on groceries, and medicine we do have co-pays and if we were just getting one or not so bad but it comes to $45 and co-pays for the doctor run from $2.00 tho $3.50 and its adds up when you are on a fixed income.

How does food stamps only allow you to eat once a day?  Use coupons and buy cheaper food.  You can get ramen noodles for 11 cents.  Two packages would feed both of you and that is a meal for 22 cents.  But a big thing of oatmeal and a loaf of bread.  Another cheap meal.  Get a jar of peanut butter.  Last forever.  Eat crackers or bread with it.

The government seems to think people can live on a very small amount of money.  People that get SSI don't get much in the way of food stamps.  Blondie didn't mention how much she got so we can't judge if she's doing the best she can or not.  We have no idea if they have food allergies or other restrictions.  Coupons don't cover real, whole foods, just processed foods full of chemical additives and genetically modified ingredients that make us sick.  Ramen noodles have MSG - there's nothing nutritious about them.  I too am on SNAP and I'm trying to eat healthy, real food to improve my health.  It's not easy, it doesn't go as far as it used too.  The incentive expired, but the economy hasn't really improved.  I can't wait for gardening season so I can get more fresh ingredients.

I've noticed a huge hike in prices for anything ranging from bread to meat and everything in between.  I sometimes feel like the retailers jack up the prices on all items even if they aren't affected by some weird happening (like a drought).  I think it's all a bunch of hooey!!!!!!!

I love ramen, I eat ramen & can afford food.  It is 6 packages for $1 at the dollar store.  I add scrambled raw eggs & I'm good to go.   Not the healthiest of all foods, but you can doctor it up & it is good enough.     The 99 cent store has fresh & often organic fruits & vegetables, there is a plethora of decent food at the 99 cent store.    There are also tons of food banks & churches who will give you food.   I volunteered at a food bank & the surplus of food was almost as big as a costco, insane how much food there is, if you live close to a city, one just needs to put their hand out.   If you are out in the country, it might be harder to get food bank foods.    I don't spend a lot of money on food, I am a vegetarian that's why, Meat is the big money killer for food, I think.

Milk has been going up a lot here already!  I use coupons whenever possible.  I also do secret shopping/mystery shopping and always sign up for the grocery shops.   Several of the reimbursements are 15.00 to 20.00, if you use coupons with that you can get almost all of your groceries for free.  I get meat coupons mostly from store loyalty cards.  I get milk coupons from California Milk, but I don't know if they are good outside of California since it has to be milk from California with the stamp on it.

Things like cereal, clothes detergent, toilet paper are ridicules. Meat is outrageous. We are on a fixed income also and have custody of our grandson, but we can't get food stamps. It is really hard to eat a decent meal.

Before they stop the food banks. everyone please look up the churches that give out food as they do not discriminate if your earning some money and have children. at least you can stock up in case they stop the programs and one that was a great weekly program here has been stopped already. it had salads and sweets and breads once a week. allowing 3 of each and was so great. and now gone as money to support these places are being taken away and they are depending on the wealthy to help out now.

Yep, food prices have gone up. Luckily there are also some good sales once in a while, so I typically just try to stock up on those items.

Yes I have noticed that food prices have gone up - particularly meat. I've always shopped at Super Walmart because they offer everyday low prices but even there, the ground beef can be $4 or $5 per pound. So now I find myself flipping between two or three grocery stores to catch the latest sale in chicken wings! I will continue to do this. The shops are only about a mile apart so any savings I get are worthwhile.

It actually depends on where you live.  I don't know of any food banks in my town.  There is a program where they give away food once every 3 months.  It's not a church or anything.  It's part of the welfare thing.

I have no issues with people getting help.  And there are people who work and get food stamps.  My issue is when people get something for free and then cry and say that ain't enough.  Well it is better than nothing.

I was working before Christmas and this girl said she needed help with Christmas.  She was full time and made good money.  But anyway.  They had a chilli dinner for her.  $5 a plate.  I did not participate.  At the end of the night she (I was in the break room and witnessed this) went to the bowl and got the money and there was a lot in there and looked at it and I swear said "this aint enough but it will help".  I could have hit her.  Then after work I saw her buying a huge bag of paper plates and napkins and crap like that.

I guess I have seen so many people who lie that I just don't believe people any longer.  And I know people who are really struggling and they don't get anything and they don't beg for money from everyone so people get mad at them when they don't give to a collection like the one I just described.

I don't know.  I guess I am just frustrated.  Most of the people I personally have seen that are on disability are NOT disabled.  They are lazy.  They can do anything they want to.  They just don't work.  These same people get everything they can for free and are able to manipulate people into giving them more and more money.

I know of another situation where a woman had breast cancer.  She lied about how bad it was.  She lied about a lot of stuff.  Some people she worked with raised over $1000 in cash more than once and gave it to her.  And in the end she was lying about everything.  I get really upset when I see people like that getting help thrown at them in every direction and others who are truly struggling and lay awake at night worrying about where they can find a job or how they will keep their home and nothing good ever seems to come there way.
