ashamed to tell the Doctor
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:46:35 am »
Has anyone ever had something that wrong with them and they were ashamed to show it or tell it to their doctor? I have a problem that I know needs to be looked into but I really don't want to show it to anyone.

:) I've been in that position. All I could figure out to do was to grin and bear it,and it'll be over quick. The doc will know or send you to someone who does know. So, just gitter done!

Yeah, you sometimes just have to bite the bullet and just do it. Remember that they are doctors and have probably seen stuff just as bad or worse, and that they aren't there to judge you as a person, but just to diagnose and treat issues we have.

Actually I had to do this once, and I'm now glad that I had talked to the doctor instead of hoping it'd go away... I noticed that I was developing a rash and was afraid that it might be an STD even though I hadn't had sexual contact in quite a while. But I decided to get it checked out and found out I just had a yeast infection. Now while men can get yeast infections, it is pretty rare occurrence and is usually a sign of some other problem like some sort of immune suppression, so they wanted to conduct more tests to rule out other disease that I didn't know about (eg AIDs, Leukemia, etc.). It was through this that I learned I was diabetic, and that the rash was just one of the signs of my disease. So because I went to the doctor even though I was embarrassed to do so, I'm glad that I did and learned about my true underlying condition, and now that I know I can better regulate my blood sugar levels.

Poor you! I haven't exactly been in that situation but my husband has! He had something he wanted the doc to take a look at but it was in a really delicate place. In the end, he just decided to bite the bullet and get it over and done with. He decided the doc must have seen many things they would prefer not to remember and the chances are, you'll probably never see them in Walmart!

If you must, go see a doctor you don't know!! There you will not be ashamed of whatever behavior brought about your 'condition'. The key is seeing a doctor, just deal with it and get the matter dealt with.

Don't be ashamed.  There's nothing you can show your Doctor that he or she hasn't already seen.  In the process, you could be saving your own life.

If it's life threatening I wouldn't care what the doctor thought, get it checked out.

I feel this way sometimes, but if it is important then don't be ashamed of telling the doctor at all. They are there to help you.

Heck yeah! But at the end of the day, I decided to make it known to the doctor. They are professional, and no matter how bad your situation may seem, I'm sure they've seen much worse! It's better to bring it up and have it looked and treated (if needed) than not mention it and wind up paying the price later!

I agree with BlackSheep, there is nothing your doctor hasn't seen already.  I know it might be hard for you to show them, but honestly it's not a bid deal to them.  I don't know what it is, but please go before it gets worse.

Yes, I have had these situations. Plus, I have been abused and made to feel ashamed by doctors here in this town. I was disabled by them, I will never trust another prescription drug and I do not trust most doctors.

I have been in that predicament before.  You'd be better safe than sorry.  There are times when telling the doctor may make it worse.  I recall that a woman and a man I knew had cancer.  The doctors took them to the operating room and, from my understanding, when the oxygen hit the cancer cells, it became worse.  The man died six months after his operation, and the woman fared no better.  If you know your doctor well, tell him.  What's the worst that can happen?  Since we are not exactly clear of what you are ashamed of, the best person to tell would be your doctor.  Also remember that your doctor could not do his job without God's help.  He is the best doctor of all.  I hope you get better soon. ??? ??? ???

No - Doctors have seen it all, to them you are just a patient to be seen & they probably have seen it all.  Just know that all they care about is fixing the issue & doing their job, they are professionals & they are paid to be professional & they have to keep all your information confidential, so just go there like you aren't embarrassed or ashamed & tell your Doctor.

I found that having a same sex doctor helps a lot too with not feeling uncomfortable.    :monkey:

Best of luck, hopefully it is nothing serious.

I'm a nurse so it really hasn't happened to me, but if you like your doctor, rest assured that s/he will treat it objectively and professionally and think nothing more of it.
