Preakness Horse Race
« on: June 13, 2014, 08:19:55 am »
Did anyone follow that race recently held?
I had heard of Belmont and Kentucky Derby races. This was the first time I heard of Preakness.
I never really paid that much attention to horse racing before.
I never had neighbors discuss the race in years past.

The Triple Crown are three races:  The Kentucky Derby, which is held on the first Saturday in May, the Preakness Stakes, which is held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, and the Belmont, which is held three weeks after the Preakness Stakes.  To get the Triple Crown, the horse has to win all three races, which is why we haven't had a Triple Crown winner since 1978, when Affirmed won all three races.  California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, but Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes.  Had California Chrome won the Belmont, he would have been the first winner since 1978.  I have been following horse racing since 1984, when I attended my first race.  I will say this:  California Chrome had the chance to win the Belmont, had he broke to the lead early.  Tonalist did not run in the Derby or the Preakness.  I hope I answered your question.   :rainbow: :rose:

I knew California Chrome wasn't going to make it at Belmont.  It's the longest of the three tracks they had to run at a mile and a half.  The jockey that was riding him never won at Belmont, and the horse this jockey rode last made his horse stumble out of the starting gate.  If you noticed, California Chrome did a half-stumble out of the gate, too.  The other riders locked them in at one point, and coming around the last quarter mile, CC was on the outside.  The jockey was whoopin' on him to no avail.  If you want my opinion, they needed a way better jockey.

Just to answer your question (LOL), the Preakness is the second race held in the Triple Crown.  There'll never be another horse like Secretariat.  I'm so glad I got to see him.  :)

I think CC's owner had a point though. Why can you race a horse in the Belmont that didn't race in the other two races?Doesn't make much sense to me. ???

I have won money on horses that were longshots, and I have won not a lot of money on favorites.  First of all, as California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, the odds were not that bad.  However, people invested $9 million dollars at the Belmont on California Chrome.  His odds were 4:5.  Tonalist's odds were 9:1.  He won the race.  To figure it out, $2 X 9 = 18, 18 + $2 = $20.  Tonalist only paid $20.40 ($9.20 X 2 + 2) to win  for the $2 bet.  California Chrome tied for 4th place and paid nothing; however, the Superfecta (the first 4 horses in order) of which California Chrome was a part of, paid $3,000 and the superfecta with the 9 horse, paid $5,000.  The fact is, there was a fortune to be won (betting horses alone, the quinella, perfecta, trifecta, and superfecta) and I won $54.20 when I first started going to the horse races betting on a 60:1 horse and he placed.  You don't win if you don't take risks.  It is called gambling, but I would rather take a risk than not take one.      :rainbow: :rose:
