Fourth of July weekend, not so much for the dogs
« on: July 07, 2014, 04:27:48 pm »
Received a call today from a close friend who asked me how my Fourth of July weekend went. I told her I had a pretty good time with my family; we went to our town's parade and enjoyed the festivities at a nearby park. I asked her about her weekend. She replied that her and her dog had a great time picnicking with neighbors on the Fourth, and then the fireworks came that night. Her poor dog was so spooked by the noise that she had to go back to her apartment where her dog ended up jumping in the bath tub, shaking like a leaf, and would not come out until the fireworks ended. She said he was still in a panicky state on Monday, must have thought the noises would return.
I had a collie for 12 years who did the same thing during the Fourth of July, and I was always at my wit's end trying to console her. Needless to say, that time of year was shaky for me and my dog. Anyone else experience similar episodes with their dogs during this holiday?

My dog is terrified of any loud noises( fireworks, thunderstorms, car alarms, etc)

I just give her Benadryl before I know any loud noises are going to happen or as soon as I can to get her calmed back down

I just got a new yorkie puppy, he is 16 weeks old, I was really worried about how he would do with all the noise. I have to say he did great. So lucky that he didn't get scared at all. Maybe he is still too much of a baby that it didn't bother him. Hopefully by next year when he is an adult he will still be good with the loud noises, storms aren't wrrying him too much either.
