A Problem with the Switch on My Laptop Computer

I have an HP Windows laptop that just updated to Windows 10 and hasn't always slept or shutdown when asked to since the update. Sometimes the switch stays on, and I have to hold it down to make the computer turn off. I want somebody to tell me what could be the problem before I wind up breaking the switch on that laptop computer.
