Happy Hummingbird Day!
« on: September 05, 2015, 08:24:19 am »
Do you have a hummingbird feeder? I bought a gorgeous glass with the plastic flowers on it. filled it with the red-colored food and hoped for the best. It took for a while but once they knew it was there, even my cat sees them. They are cute and the hummingbirds get along with the blue jays.

I have hummingbirds and several feeders.  You don't have to buy that hummingbird red colored food.  They LOVE just water and sugar.  Seems the sweeter the better for them;  and as long as the feeder flowers are red to draw them in.

I used to buy special hummingbird food, until I went to a family friend's house & their feeder was a simple feeder with just sugar and water, wasn't even red, and they had so many hummingbirds using it.

I enjoy my hummingbirds, everyday :)

Love hummingbirds.   aflyingmonkey is correct.  Sugar water is fine.   1-4 ratio.   1 cup water, boiling, 1/4 cup sugar.  I usually make a large batch and keep it in my fridge so I can refill when needed.   I don't add any red food coloring.  My hummingbird feeder has red on it.   I adore them.   When the flowers on my crepe myrtle are blooming they don't come to the feeder as much but they still arrive.  I always hate when I have to take it down.

Didn't know there was a Hummingbird Day.  I have several bird feeders in my yard, two for hummingbirds.  I love watching the birds, it's relaxing.

Didn't know that! We have a feeder but they haven't really noticed it. But we have some honeysuckle bushes and they love that.

I didn't know about Hummingbird "Day" or that you could use just sugar water rather than the store formula.  Thanks for that information, michele2042:  "Sugar water is fine.   1-4 ratio.   1 cup water, boiling, 1/4 cup sugar.  I usually make a large batch and keep it in my fridge so I can refill when needed."

I imagine it is too late for this summer, but next summer I plan to put a hummingbird feeder out!

I too make my own nectar, however I cook mine, just to make sure I kill any impurities, once cooled put into feeder, I change my nectar every 3 days otherwise it starts to go bad

That is a good tip!   I never thought about changing it out, I just refill it as needed.

I've kept a feeder for years.  I put it out in April, when they first show up and take it down in October when they migrate south.  I make nectar, it's just a simple syrup.  One cup sugar to four cups water, bring to a boil and shut off.  I get two species:  Black-Chin and Broadtail all season long, but in the summer I also get Rufous and Calliope.  :)

DO NOT ADD RED COLOR!!!  It makes their eggshells weak and the babies die.  :P
