Where is "Mall of America" located?
The Mall of America is in Bloomington, Minnesota, which is near the Twin Cities. It is the largest mall in the United States. It is a large tourist attraction with it's 520 shops, 50+ restaurants, Nickelodeon UniverseŽ, SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium, American GirlŽ, LEGO world and more....
I have been there numerous times over the years. Since shopping is not high on my list of favorite things to do, going to the Mall of America is more of a social or tourist event for me. Fun to people watch. Fun to meet friends and eat at a restaurant.
I agree that going to MoA is more for fun than for shopping. Since MN is already renown for their malls (Southdale in another Minneapolis suburb is the first fully enclosed, indoor mall in the US), there are a plethora of other malls that I'd rather go to for shopping trips. The only caveat would be that since MoA is so large, it is able to have more specialty shops aside from the "regular" ones that you'd find in any other mall. For example, Lego World is a huge store that only sells Lego items, so when I was shopping for a friend's birthday present, knowing that they were a huge Lego fan, I went to MoA to shop at Lego World for their present.
I've actually been pleasantly surprised with parking there... They have a big parking ramp on the outside of it with pedestrian walkways that connect to every level of the mall (the mall having 4 levels of shops). Although there has been times when I driven around looking for parking, usually not nearly as long as I'd have to do for other malls in the area. I think part of the reason why parking is so good is in part because of the public transportation... Many bus routes end up stopping there, including a few "Park N Ride" where you park in a lot away from the mall and take a bus / shuttle to MoA. And many of the hotels in the area (Bloomington also has the MSP airport a few miles away from MoA, so there are tons of hotels around that area for the Twin Cities travelers) also offer shuttle services to MoA.
Going to MoA is definitely an experience. It was the first times I've ever seen anything like an indoor amusement park (no, not MoA itself, but the amusement park in the middle of the mall). Many of the stores are also very large and have things to bring in the tourists... Lego World usually has a huge Lego sculpture (structure?) built in the store as well as a play area where anyone can just go to town building with Legos. There was a sports shop (not sure if they're still there) that boasted having an indoor, virtual driving range; a batting cage; and an indoor ski hill that customers could freely use to test out the sporting goods before making their purchase. Even some of the restaurants have a large gift shop inside them to sell the tourists more than just food.
