Minimum wage in your state?
« on: April 06, 2016, 08:12:02 am »
Do you think minimum wage in your state is the right amount?

I live in Virginia and I don't think it is. Last time I checked it was about $7.34 an hour. I'm sure people that don't live in Virginia think that it is enough. However, the cost of living, cost of food, cost of bills, are just too much for minimum wage.

I also don't think it's right when people try to compare Virginia to a place such as New York. I know New York is very expensive, and I don't know anything about their minimum wage. However, I disagree with people in the past trying to tell me that $7.34 is enough to live in Virginia when they have never even been and live in a place such as New York.

Thankfully I have had opportunities to earn up to $9 an hour and I am hoping that my next job will be at least $9 an hour especially considering that I have college debt to pay off.

Anyway, what are your thoughts about your states minimum wage overall?

Our minimum wage is $7.25.  I live in MD.  The minimum wage will increase to $11.50 by next year.  I think the current minimum wage is too low.

I hope ours will increase soon. I've earned and have the potential to earn $9 an hour. I've done it before, and hopefully with my next job I will also.

In Ohio, our minimum wage is $8.10 an hour, with a cost of living adjustment at the beginning of each year that usually  increases it by a few cents. The minimum wage workers didn't get a raise this year because inflation wasn't high enough to trigger the increase.I think I would have a difficult time living on $8.10 an hour.It should be higher.

I live in Maine and ours is currently 7.50.  I definitely think it should be higher.  It's enough for me to survive on currently, but I'm living as inexpensively as possible (coupons, deals, less expensive town, etc) and I'm worried about being able to pay back my student loans when those kick in.

It doesn't matter what you make the minimum wage. Prices will just go up. McDonald's is leading the way by using AI technology kiosks and firing people. They aren't going to pay $15/hr to cook burgers or press buttons on a cash register. If they do, say hello to your $5 value menu and goodbye to the $1. I hate McDonald's anyway, but that is any easy comparison.

The minimum wage here in California is $10/hour and will soon be $15/hr. All these people who wanted a "livable wage" don't know much about economics.  It's terrible, the price of everything is going to skyrocket.

I live in Washington State and our current min wage is 9.47. In Seattle it is up to $15.00 an hour. With the cost of living increasing I hope to see that min wage will increase soon. I know some many people that work so hard and it is hard to keep their house hold going.

I live in PA and I "think" ours is still $7.25 but not a single company that I know pays that. They all pay more than that. Even tire changers are making upwards of $10/hour.  I think Walmart is paying $9/hr. or more.

Average pay for warehouse workers  is $13.50 and up. That's the only jobs we have available in my area. The last textile manufacturer just went out of business last year. They made a well-known major insulated clothing line, but China makes them cheaper, even though they're poor quality. No more shoe factories either.

My son works for a place that manufactures parts for helicopters and planes. Right now, he's making $22.50 and in another 2 months, it will be close to $30/hr. He lives 5 minutes away from the place. My other son is a carpenter/welder and makes around $35/hr.

I think so, but if the Governor started fracking, this could create better  paying jobs.....and boast the state

If minimum wages jump up that high and that fast, that will lead to a negative domino effect: many minimum wage jobs will be eliminated due to increased costs to employers; workplace efficiency and productivity will drop; prices will increase for everyone (including those making minimum wage).  Minimum wage jobs are not meant to be head of household/support the entire family lifetime careers.

Here in Illinois the minimum wage is $8.25  but for City of Chicago workers it is $13.00.  Guess it pays to be a city worker.
