I'm surprised no one complained to his manager. Not even his coworkers?...My sister works at a grocery store and they are always telling on each other for minute things, so I can't imagine someone getting away with texting at the register.

Were there customers behind you jumping to another line? Maybe it is part of a show to see how people would react like "What would you do?" on ABC. You get to see people from all walks of life from small towns to big cities on that show. In this case, maybe he had a reason to be multi tasking in front of the customers.

LOL that is the proof that people loooove their jobs! (not?).... I guess that when we go shopping we expect the person to be the nicest, happiest, with the biggest smile... which is fake most of the time anyway...

I think that, you could kindly ask "what is my total".... You could add "hmm excuse me if I am bothering you... "... as a joke, if the person seems like a cool person....

But there is not much to do. Try to put yourself in his shoes... I guess it can be boring being a cashier... but someone's got to do it...

and even some people in the store, those with big smiles that follow you around in the store like a puppy asking "Can I help?... and now?... and can I help you now???... What about now???"...
That it just as fake as completing ignoring at the cash register...
They don't care about you... do you care about them??? Nope.....

Just because you expect someone to act a certain way... I think that as long as we don't disrespect or hurt each other... life could be great!

I think its totally rude of them to be doing that while they are checking you out.  I would say....  excuse me  but can you please pay attention to what you are doing after all I am paying for this and dont want mistakes made.  If they continued to ignore me,  I would ask to speak to their supervisor because not only are they being rude to customers  they are making the store look bad.

Report it to the manager... If there is a self checkout lane, I would always go to it
