Feeling Nervous
« on: December 22, 2016, 03:38:28 pm »
I applied for a private student loan today, and was told that my application is flagged as a "Non-US Permanent Resident". I'm not sure if the person who entered my information mistakenly selected that option, but I am a full-fledged US Citizen. Have been for all 30 years of my life. To make a long story short, they are telling me to just submit my birth certificate and they can correct it. But I am worried as to why this happened in the first place. A part of me wants to just think it was a typing error by the person who took my information, but another part of me is nervous about identity fraud. About 2 weeks ago, I did check my credit reports from all 3 credit bureaus, and everything seemed normal. Is it possible for someone to steal my identity and change my citizenship status? Or am I just overthinking this whole thing?

I used to work in a financial institution although it was many years ago now. My guess is that technically there is no "flag" as such, but more that there is insufficient evidence as of right now to prove that you are who you say you are. And of course they want to be sure that they are going to get their money back. So my guess is they are just taking extra steps to protect themselves and with all the identity theft going on these days, so they should. If for example you have not lived at your present address for that long, that is exactly the kind of "flag" that might prompt them to get further evidence. I'm sure it'll all work out fine.

That's what it sounds like to me. I'm sure everything is fine and they just want to make sure.

I would want to know WHY as well.  I am wondering first what your real name is.  If it is not a foreign sounding name or maybe your parents were foreign and you were born here?  If that is the case then they are just making sure you are legal.  I know a lot of people who are here illegally and they have a baby here illegally and then the kid is supposedly legal.  Idk.  Personally, I think everyone should have to submit proof then there is no questions.
Any time I have applied for a loan I had to submit proof that I am a legal citizen of the US.  And my family is from the US at least as far back as the 1700's. lol

And no, no one can steal your identity and just change your citizenship status.  Why would they do that?  If you are a legal citizen just submit your birth certificate and it should be fine.  But if you received this request email or something and you do not feel it is legit then contact the loan people yourself and ask if they really asked for it.  Sometimes people will do something like this to get you to give them your information so they can steal your identity.

I wouldn't say you are overthinking things because it pays to be cautious today there is so much evil in the world being perpetuated against honest people.  Try though not to over worry and just keep persevering until it gets straightened out.  I had something similar happen two days ago with an amazon purchase and it did really make me nervous but I just did what I could do to have the situation investigated and corrected.  Take care and I'm sure things will get straightened out for you.

Try focusing on others is the best medicine. It stops you from thinking about your self. Also use a nickname.

I would just show the birth certificate, and may be that same person will be able to help you with this and you can see if there was an error.

I'm sure it's just a simple mistake and not identity theft.  But be cautious, nonetheless.
