building a nest
« on: February 18, 2017, 06:40:32 am »
I have palm trees outside my window.
The last couple days, I have seen a squirrel with his mouth full of something similar to grass.
Birds use it to build their nests.
I was wondering where the squirrel was going to build a nest.
I didn't know until now that squirrels had nests.

They are crafty little critters....squirrels.

I imagine they like a comfy bedding in their hole in the tree.

The only problem I have had, is when they decide to build their nest in my attic. It was a couple hundred dollars to have them trapped and relocated. Once they get in the house, I am told it's impossible to keep them out. However, we do enjoy having so many in our yard, especially the ones with big silver tails.

This may sound weird to some people, but we have squirrel houses nailed on 4 of our huge maple trees in the backyard.  They do build a nest in the houses and then we wait for the births.  We watch the little heads peak out of the opening of the house as mommy or daddy are gone getting food for them.  Eventually they come out on a branch, but scamper back in.  Soon you see them leaving the nest for good.  It's really something to see.

Squirrels are funny animals. They are practical hoarders. At the end of summer, they like to store food for winter when the weather is against them and they cannot go out to hunt and gather.
They store dry fruit, berries...anything they like to eat during wintertime.

If you ever look way up in the oak trees and see a bunch of leaves all clumped together, that is squirrels nest.

Yeah, squirrels do build nests, on top of trees, that are roundish to survive the winter!  :snowman:
