I have! The $ stores ur told to empty ur handheld basket. I don’t see the cashier not having hands to take items out of the basket! Then be told to put up the basket in the front of the store as u go out!

Better to check your self out! What u can at Walmart & Targe! Lol!

I swear the customer should be given a big discount, giftcards, tax free items, &/or other perks for pretty much doing everything by ourselves!

I prefer checking myself out... I usually do a better job than the cashiers.

Our Walmart has signs stating "We Support the American Worker" all over the self scan area. This is just wrong  ???

When it is few items, I rather use the self check out at Walmart or Stop and Shop.

I tend to want to check myself out.  I can usually find a self check with no line while the ones with clerks have long lines.  Walmart can do a better job with more clerks at checkout.  It's the same at Christmas time.  Can be frustrating having to wait in long lines.

I've just recently started using the self check out when I have 1-6 items...don't like it but it is quick...hardly anyone uses them, especially the older folk...

I work in a retail store.  I'm not a cashier nor do I have anything to do with front end duties.  However I know that cashiers are timed.  Individually and as a whole cashiers have times to meet.  This is to help our customers get in and out of the check out lines in a timely manner.  When cashiers have to stop to take things out of customers baskets or wait for them to get there payments or coupons figured out that affects there time.  This affects the line movement which effects other customers waiting behind them.  All these details, times etc in turn tell the stores how many cashiers are needed at peak ours of the day.  When someone is handicapped, elderly or have something else preventing them from taking things out of baskets cashiers can help when a utility clerk is unavailable.  Cashiers do not have space to collect baskets.  If they did it would be a safety concern...leading to yet another strike against them. Cashiers are there to service our customers within the guidelines they are required (to keep there jobs) to do.  Waiting on our customers by putting baskets away is not there responsibility.

??? What?? Perhaps they think we're the proletariat and are all part of the worker state?  ???

I don't see a problem with putting your own basket or buggy up. Personally I would about rather ring it up myself unless I have a lot of stuff. I don't expect a discount for doing it myself either. And the store doesn't charge tax. Your state does. So if you want it tax free look to the state you live in not the store you make the purchase from.

I don't see the problem. They have the SAME amount of cashiers. It is just a couple of the cashiers are watching multiple registers.  And I have never saw those signs in our stores.  The cashier watching 5 registers is still working. You still have a couple who ring up stuff in the middle of the store - so I don't see what the problem is.

I agree. People tend to think the cashiers or others working are there to be their slave. I have been a cashier before and it was in a place where the customer was suppose to put the items on the counter.  If they stand there with items in a buggy I stood there and looked at them or asked them to to put the items on the counter.
No, it wasn't my job to walk around the counter and get the stuff out of the cart for them.

the only thing about self check out is when the machine goes loopy on you like " assistantance needed to skip bagging or please remove item from bagging area". then a worker has to help you anyway so makes one wonder what is the point for self checkout although  in lieu of this i will admit i use self checkout whenever i can

We don't have that problem with Dollar stores or Wal-Mart.

I don't really like self check out. So I won't use it. I like the interaction with the clerk at the register too, and knowing I'm doing something that supports more jobs. I don't mind that self check out is available, especially in places like Walmart where, at least here, they are always understaffed and the lines are long to simply get out the door. But I don't like using it personally.
