Yea We're doing it
« on: February 11, 2020, 12:04:04 pm »
After shockingly losing his job recently my son and I have gotten down and dirty with our money.  We started back cooking (he used to bring home food from work) and really scouring the sales paper for the grocery store.  I think we will survive if we just be careful and not lazy.  Anyone have any cheap delicious meal ideas?

I use coupons a lot, they really do save money.  Pasta is pretty cheap to make and you can put tons of different toppings.  Google pasta, I have a recipe for clams (out of a can) one with green and red peppers, etc.  Good luck , I know you can do it!!

For me, the best bang for my buck is casseroles! I mean, you can use everything from relatively expensive ingredients (like mac and cheese or canned tuna) to leftovers and come out with a lot of cheap, delicious food! Just my take on it anyway. Thankfully we've not lost a major job (prayers for your son finding another one soon), but we still save every penny we can by making said casseroles!  :peace:

I use a lot of apps on my phone and coupons, after all is done I pay less than half price for my groceries. Its just a thought if you want to be frugal with your money.

Baked Ziti is cheap to make, especially if you shop deals -- cheap & makes enough to feed an army, with leftovers & some to freeze for the future. You can find recipes on the internet & just add stuff to the basic recipe - which is just noodles, cheese & sauce, I add spinach, mushrooms & sometimes ground turkey.

If you're around Krogers/Ralphs they have Friday/Saturday deals, & several times a year you can get Prego/Ragu/Classico for 99c a jar.  Stock up when there are sales.

Good luck :)

Anything you can buy a lot of and or use multiple nights....I'll buy a meal, some add ons and dessert and eat them several nights a week...therefore I get a mix of food each night but can get multiple nights from the same dishes...

Soup. I make a lot of soup. I make hamburger soup a lot-one of hubby's favorites, but so is beef stew, chili, spaghetti, tacos, shepherd's pie, shredded pork BBQ, steak salad (you'd be surprised how little steak it takes to make this). A 9 lb. ham gives grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, ham and string beans, sliced ham and hash browns, and bone and broth for bean soup, and other meals. Pierogies can be made different ways. Chicken pot pie (not those by Swanson or Banquet styles but home made PA dutch pot pie. Homemade mac and cheese.  I make extra mashed 'taters when making them for a meal and freeze them. Quick and easy. Thaw them out, heat and stir. Done. A 4 lb. Pot roast in Crock Pot makes 2 meals for us, second one is left over beef shredded with added BBQ sauce on  burger buns. Grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Grilled cheese and tomato soup.  I used to spend over $100-$150 a week or every 2 weeks for groceries. Now I spend $150 a month or every 1-1/2 months. Depends on what's on sale.

Buy everything when on sale and when it is, buy extra. Even better if you have coupons, too, but food coupons seem to be scare lately. If canned veggies are on sale, buy double or triple the amount. Same with the stock or broths if you use them, and meats When peppers are 3/$2 at the produce store, I buy 9 and clean and freeze them for various meals, usually stuffed peppers. A "meat store" sells 10 lb. chicken *bleep* for $13. They last us a month or because the *bleep* are so big, I only need a 1/2 breast for a meal.

Coupons are always good and you can probably find other ways on the internet; goggle something like cheap meals at home. Good luck.

if you use chicken at all, it's probably more cost effective  if you get the whole bird rather than the cut parts.  Then you can do your own carving, have several meals and a carcass for soup.

I don’t know if you have a Weiss Market, but they are having a sale on pork chops and pork roasts.  Buy 1 get 2 free, yes it’s buy 1 get 2 free.  The price I paid for a pork roast was $9.34 ok, but that’s for 3 roasts, same goes for the chops.  Check the flyers for different stores that have different sales.

There are tons of deal websites and if you factor in promotions from phone apps and such you can get stuff pretty cheap.
