Washington Redskins changing name and logo
« on: July 13, 2020, 08:57:06 am »
This is great news.  About time.  What should the new name be?  My vote is Washington Warriors.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/13/us/washington-redskins-nickname-change-spt/index.html

(CNN)The National Football League's Washington franchise will change the Redskins name and logo, the team announced Monday in a statement.

The new name of the team was not revealed.
The announcement comes just days after the team said that a "thorough review" of the name would be conducted. The name has long been denounced by Native American groups as an ethnic slur.
"That review has begun in earnest," Monday's statement said. "As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward. Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review."

Team owner Daniel Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera "are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."
Rivera told The Washington Post in an interview he was working with Snyder on a name that would honor both the military and Native Americans.
Following weeks of protests denouncing racism and as the country continues to confront systems of oppression more directly in recent weeks, the Washington Redskins are the first team to announce a name change. The Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians have also pledged to reexamine their name. The team's manager recently said he believes it's time to change the name and "it's time to move forward."

I may be splitting hairs here, but here it is... I understand the principle behind the push to rename Redskins; I don't necessarily agree, but I understand that the name can be considered derogatory. Let's just put that mascot aside for the moment.

What is wrong with the name "Indians"? This is a serious and legitimate question... What???

I am not a Cleveland Indians fan (although I do live inside their primary geographic market). I will not be heartbroken if the name gets changed, but what is wrong with it? They got rid of the Chief Wahoo caricature a few years ago.

Is the name "Indian" really so offensive and insensitive? Somebody sell me on this one, because I am not seeing it. I've heard numerous anecdotes about real and true native Americans who took pride in the Cleveland Indians team merchandise.

We are heading to the point where any and all human classifications of sports mascots will be outlawed.

Let's get rid of the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Braves because, like the Indians - these team names are offensive and racist recognition of native Americans, despite being representative of honorable classes among those of that race.

Let's get rid of the New England Patriots (no, really, let's get rid of those cheaters for real) and the Philadelphia 76ers, because they represent the founding of the nation of slave owning bigots and we can no longer be proud of our shameful country and its past history.

Let's get rid of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Las Vegas Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers because they represent violent thieves and marauders of the seas.

Let's get rid of the Green Bay Packers because their name is founded on the meat packing industry - and they are offensive to peta and vegan snowflakes.

Let's get rid of the Kansas City Royals, Sacramento Kings, and L.A. Kings because they represent a society with privileged aristocracy whose rule comes strictly by birthright. Let's lump the Cleveland Cavaliers into this offensive group also since they were supporters of British royalty.

Let's get rid of the Washington Wizards (already moved on from the more violent name Washington Bullets) and throw in the Orando Magic as well - since they represent a world of spells and magic and occultism.

Let's get rid of the Columbus Blue Jackets because - even though they are named after the Union soldiers of the Civil War who fought to end slavery - they were still tied to the history of slavery and we must erase all history of everything tied to slavery.

Let's get rid of the Houston Texans, because Texas has historically been a conservative/right leaning state and most Texans are therefore deplorables who should not be celebrated or honored in this way.

Let's get rid of the Dallas Cowboys, because the Cowboys were harsh persecutors of the native Americans.

Let's get rid of the Texas Rangers, because their name is drawn from law enforcement and God knows that there has never been anything good about any police force since the dawn of time, they are all a bunch of racist pigs.

Let's get rid of the Minnesota Vikings and the Boston Celtics, because they both represent caricatures of Northern European cultures and we have to be fair here and cannot single out only red or brown racism with our offensive sports team names.

Let's get rid of the Houston Astros, because their name relates to space and aeronautics - and we all know, especially with the new Space Force created by Orange Man Bad that astronauts and space exploration is nothing more than the modern day racist Christopher Columbus hell bent on acquiring new territory and conquering and killing the space age equivalent of native Americans.

Let's get rid of the San Diego Padres, because - let's face it - their name is so extremely offensive since it is tied to the Catholic church and those pedophile priests who lead that flock.

Let's get rid of the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees, two more team names that invoke pride for being Americans - the most despicable nation that has ever existed on this earth.

I think I am about done here - and I apologize for any of the racist/offensive/derogatory/elitist professional sports team names that I might have missed. I'm sure there were several that I failed to bring to mind.

Agreed, it is time to move forward. The new name should be something that people won't find offensive in the future -- perhaps they should play it safe & name their football team after a color, like Stanford did; & have their mascot be a plant or shrub, also like Stanford did.

Stanford's Football Team is named the Cardinals, after the color (not the birds) -- & their mascot is literally a Tree.

I agree 100%. UGetPaid, your reply was so funny, but on the other hand so sad, enough is enough with all the name changes after all these years.  You hit the nail on the head!

Ok I take my use of the word ignorant back not so much that as ridiculous.  I mean people are dropping like flies from the coronovirus but lets worry about a team called the redskins.  I mean I am part American Indian and it didn't offend me.

UGetPaid - I totally agree with you. That is exactly what's going to happen. Next will be the military bases and then the city, county, lakes, rivers, streams, and state names  because they're named after Indian names or words like Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, and so many more. Then the county and city names, of which there are thousands.  Illinois, Florida, Minnesota, Missisippi and Wisconsin are the states with the most Indian names for towns, counties, bodies of water, and more.

It's just another way to erase the history of this country. Just another way to be idiotic and I think it's ridiculous.

debidoo - you are absolutely correct, too, but I think people are sick of hearing about COVID-19 since there's nothing we can do about it right now except try to help ourselves. The "experts" aren't too smart since they don't know any more on what to do than we lowly peons. Sometimes I think they're so smart, they're stupid.  :D

I'm from Minnesota, and we are changing English names TO Native American names. We recently renamed Lake Calhoun (named after a slave-owner) to Bde Maka Ska, which means Lake White Earth in the Dakota/Lakota language. Now all the nearby businesses and residences that also have Calhoun in the name are changing them.

I really don't care one way or another. I actually like the name Lake Maka Ska, rolls off the tongue nicely. But it seems like we have bigger problems right now than names of random things around town.

I do not mind seeing a name change. The can use whatever name they feel that fits them.

The timing is definitely interesting...it had been talked about for years....does this mean other teams might follow suit soon too (eg Indians)? Should they? Or is this too much?

Mind you all, I DO NOT follow sports least of them all American Football. But I do live on the DC metropolitan area and that is all the news are talking about these days around here.  Plus their Name and Logo are everywhere you look.

But I agree 100% with everything you all have said.  America is trying to erase history as we know it, "Christopher Columbus and all of the Conquistadors were Oppressive beings and should not be mentioned, they put the Americas on the map, but that is too offensive and their statutes are an eye sore.  Anything to do with slavery should be erased too, Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton and all the founding fathers should be erased from the history to since they were all Slave Owners (heck most of Northern Virginia belonged to Washington) so lets take down his house and everything he did for US.

And the "Civil War never existed" we should not honor soldiers from either side.  Lets all create a new history were no one was an Slave or oppressed by those who live before us."

Now it would be Funny if the Washington NFL team finally start getting better and WIN! I do believe that the Redskins had been Cursed! by the Indians because of their name and will never win while baring that "Offensive Name".
