Egg Whites
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:20:49 am »
You know how some recipes call for egg whites?  Well, how are you supposed to seperate them?  I learned that if you crack the egg into a funnel, the egg whites will run through and the yolk will stay put.  Happy cooking!

i have one of those funnels. it really does work to separte the whites from the yolk. the egg whites are better for you and they will help to hold your recipes together.

The shell always works the best for me. Back and forth a few times and you're done.

I generally do the shell to shell trick, although I'll now give the funnel a shot too, never hurts to have an extra option!  I've considered buying the egg whites off the shelf, but honestly I'd probably not use them fast enough once the carton is opened.  I know there are powdered egg whites as well...just too pricey for my budget.

Liquid egg whites that you buy in cartons in the store actually lasts for several months.  I bought a carton just before Halloween, and it doesn't expire until January 3 2011.  So if you need egg whites for recipes, go ahead and buy one of those cartons for the holidays! :)

I buy them all the time, but I only eat egg white omelets (I don't like the yolk) anyways.

That is a neat trick ! I have never really had a problem separating them myself but my husband does lol! He even bought an egg separator and is always looking for an excuse to use it lmao!

Those are usually processed and pasturized and all that which destroys some of the nutrients. Better to use the whole eggs, they've lost enough of their nutrients as it is.

break the egg in half over a bowl and carefully transfer the yoke from one 1/2 shell to the other letting the whites pour into the bowl. It's easy after you do it a few times.
