I am a U.S Citizen and have not personally had to go through the process but my Step-Father came over from England about 13 years ago and it was quite a process for him which is why I have a real hard time with the whole issue of people coming here illegally.

He came over on a work visa and then had to study American History. He would ask me questions about American History that even I did not know the answer to so the test is pretty hard. He went in and took the test and then his work visa expired so they made him go back to England for 6 months until he qualified for another work visa. Him and my mom married about 12 years ago and passed his test.

I really do not have any other additional information for you except I do know for a fact that you do have to speak english and pass the general american history test. Hopefully someone on here can give you more specifics. I Thank you for taking the steps to become a Legal citizen of our Great Country and hope that more people follow your example. What makes our country work is everyone doing their part... paying taxes, being involved in the community and being tolerant and welcoming of other cultures.

Assuming that you are a legal permanent resident holding an alien green card, I personally think you should seek consultation with immigration lawyers who are familiar with the INS (Immigration Naturalization Service) laws here. They are the ones who can answer your questions and help you through the naturalization process to becoming a U.S. citizen. Good luck!  :peace: :)

i was born here but my husband and his parents immigrated from mexico almost 30 years ago. my husband became a citizen almost 20 years, when he was 17 and joined the coast guard, but his parents just became citizens 3 or 4 years ago, after a 3 year process of classes and meetings with INS. i do not know anything specific about the process but i know that it was such a relief to them and to my family, knowing that we no longer have to worry about them being deported so i wish you the best of luck!
