New York State Tax License Suspension Program
« on: August 23, 2013, 05:31:52 am »
I was just reading this morning about the new law in New York State that claims if you owe more than $10,000 in back taxes, your license will be suspended. The news said that three other states do this:  California, Massachusetts and Louisiana. Apparently, Louisiana is the strictest, suspending licenses when people owe over $1,000. California is the highest at $100,000.

What do you think about this state law?

I have mixed feelings. The US tax system is such a mess and corrupt right now that I feel punishing people for the government's failure to keep taxes low and simple is...hypocritical. The gov't really needs to be aired out big time. However, if people aren't paying their fair share of taxes, of course they should be punished. But if you owe that amount, I don't know what would stop you from moving to a state where they don't do this if your license is that important to you.

Yes, I feel mixed about it too. When I first read the title of the article this morning, it sounded overly harsh... but then when I saw that the amount was over $10K, and that it was for people who were seriously delinquent and hadn't set up plans, then it didn't sound as punitive.

I don't see the connection between owing taxes and a license.  It's just another way to collect money from people  by punishment.

When I saw the title I said it's a good thing I plan to leave NY or CA but then I clicked on it and saw that CA is even worse.   :(

Well it's a good thing I don't owe taxes.

If it happens in the future I guess I'll go live anywhere but those 4 states.

Are you planning on owing back taxes or something?

I think it is a good thing.  What makes those people any better and subject to privileges over the people who pay their fair share of taxes?
Have a wonderful day!
