bugs and their bites
« on: January 16, 2018, 06:29:24 am »
I was reading a post here talking about winter weather being too cold for bugs.
reference was made that bugs in the south are more dangerous.
I can attest to that. Last March, I got bit by "something" [I didn't see what bit me]
I went through burning skin, red rash and swelling. It took me two months to get over that one.
I bought a compression sock sleeve AND bug spray after that experience.
I will be moving north to TN. to be near my sisters and their families. :rose: :rainbow:

Bites can be bad.  I few years ago I was walking through grass, taking one of my dogs for a walk, wearing sandals and something bit my ankle.  It swelled up into a huge blister and later popped some yellow goop.

I get rather serious reactions to bug bites.  Even mosquito bites swell up and get red.  No bugs here now...9 below.

Very well could have been me and that post, I moved to OK from Northern MN,  I got bit by a brown recluse spider while in OK, I have been dealing with the aftermath of that for 6 years and still have problems because i lost so much muscle on the back of my leg from it.  That spider small as it was took down a very active person to the point of using a walker to get around.  Biggest problem was it left a stinger or something in my leg and it would not heal good, no matter how much the Dr'd tried it was still a mess, till about 6 months ago when a small "like stone" worked its way out the other side of my calf... for what ever reason my 6 year fever is gone and my leg stopped aching.  Sad part the damage is not fixable, but the pain being gone is  really great.

The worst bug bites I have ever had was fire ants.  They got on my feet and bite me and it stings like fire.  They itched really bad, swelled up and I had blisters on two of my toes.  I had to take benedryl.

I live in Georgia and have never been bitten by a mosquito nor stung by a bee. I guess they don't like the way i taste, LOL! But the worst bugs here, in my opinion, are the fire ants and the termites. The fire ants are like little crazy warriors who will attack your feet and legs with no thought to their own survival. And the termites in the south are hearty creatures who are intent on eating your house! >:(

Brown recluse spiders and black widow spiders are very poisonous.  Very dangerous and as sbenkoski posted, she had serious side effects from her brown recluse spider bite.

I hope I never run into either one of these guys!!

I have a huge reaction to mosquito bites.  They turn into big , hard red lumps and sometimes give me hives.

They say if they don't stop spraying bugs with the insecticides, the bugs will evolve into bugs carrying cyanide. Flying cyanide bombs.

If I have at least one other person with me, the mosquitoes won't touch me. I guess my blood doesn't smell very sweet. I am super careful about spiders though. I was bit by a brown recluse, it wasn't life threatening, but it wasn't too pleasant either. I worry about my pets being bitten as well. I'ved tried spraying peppermint oil and insecticide around the house. Unfortunately, pepper mint oil doesn't work. (At least for me.) I hate resorting to chemical insecticide in my home, but I have pets and small children.

I was in Alabama about three months ago, on the beach, and got thes little bites all over my legs. I have lived by the ocean and never had this happen. The itching went on for about two weeks and I finally went to the doctor, got a prescription lotion, and they all went away but left little purple scars all over my legs. These critters never went above my knees which really surprised me. They were completely content to set up shop below my knees. I tried some of the remedies, found on line, to no avail. Hot tubbing in really hot, heavily chlorinated water did not do the trick.sitting in a baking hot sauna did not do anything except help me lose a few pounds. These were almost like the chiggers we used to see when I lived in the midwest but the little carnivores stayed in one place.
