Epitome of Greed?
« on: September 07, 2018, 08:27:55 am »
Did you hear about the couple who started a Go Fund Me account for a homeless vet after he gave the lady his last 20$ to pay for her gas at a station?  They have now searched the couple's house trying to find traces of the $400,000 donated because supposedly it didn't go to the homeless vet. They are saying he took what they did give him and spent it on drugs. Well here is my opinion having known two hardcore drug addicts they wouldn't give their last $20 to pay for someone's gas just not gonna happen.  These two I firmly believe are scam artists and apparently so do the authorities.  Gives charity a bad name. :cat:

I do not think you should be allowed to start a GoFundMe account for somebody else.  I would never donate to GoFundMe anyway but I certainly would not donate to some person collecting on behalf of somebody else.

I am also leery of the sad sob stories I see on any site collecting money.  Too many have turned out to be fake.

If they gave him the money how do they know what he spent it on.  And WHY would they hand him $400,000 cash? And WHERE would they even get it.  Most banks do not have that much cash laying around.

I never donate to GoFundMe.  I think it's pretty nervy of some people to ask for handouts.    There probably is some legitimate causes on there but the world has a lot of people that are too  lazy to pay for their own problems or mistakes.
(just my opinion though)  8) 8)

What a shame. I know (and really dislike) a person that started a go fund me when their spouse died and said their spouse was so concerned about how they would pay the medical bills (which didn't exist since they had Medicaid). The one that passed never wanted anyone to give money and was not concerned about the medical bills. Just a greedy person trying to make others feel sympathetic for them. It is a shame that people can use the GoFundMe page fraudulently. It makes people not want to give to any page.

I appreciate all the replies and agree with them.  For one thing during 34 years of marriage and two kids my husband and I went through some hard times - some caused by poor planning or decisions on our part but we never had anyone to pick up the slack we worked extra jobs or did without.  I hate to sound harsh but I just take people who ask for help on Go Fund Me with a grain of salt (or more)

Helping the poor is a good thing. Its just too bad there will be instances where thiefs will surface.

A book can be written on the various scams and wastes of money in this world. As long as man and Satan are in charge dont expect it to end. Many complain about it but not too interested when they are told why.

You have to wonder why they let the GoFundMe get so high before they closed it down! Why didn't they monitor it and make sure a reasonable amount was raised and just give it to the guy?  Now suddenly they don't know where the money went?  Hummmmm...I hear the police raided their place and seized some items, including their BMW.  Karma!!

Those people who did that makes it hard for people who really need help a bad name, we already think that people who ask for help, do they really want or need food or shelter, or is it just scamming?

I do donate to GoFundMe pages when I know the author of the page personally and know their request to be sincere and that they will handle the funds appropriately. This doesn't happen very often, but I donate when it does.

I don't disagree with you, but that is how I view the Go Fund Me site in general.  Either people are straight scamming or they are looking for a handout instead of providing for themselves.  I know they aren't all like that, but I feel the vast majority are.

i think the fund should monitor where all the money went.  Usually go find me don't get that high.  Where did this couple get a BMW when a few months ago she didn't have money for gas??   I personally think they ripped him off and had a great time with his money.

Yes you have to know who you're giving money. Not every sob story heard in the news or else where should be followed up. People are too gullible.
