Off-Topic / King of the Hill Taken Off Netflix
« on: October 01, 2013, 05:43:36 pm »Message ID: 800880
I am so super bummed.  I love watching King of the Hill.  I watch it every day.  I fall asleep with it on.   I often work with it on.  I had heard a rumor from one of my son's friends that Netflix was getting ready to take it off but I thought they were just teasing me because I watch it all the time.

Well today I got up and got my cup of coffee, laptop and sat down to turn on Netflix and KOTH was gone!

I know it sounds silly but it has been a part of my life for over a year now.  That show ran for like 10 seasons so there are lots of episodes.

I went to Twitter a while ago and turns out I am not alone.  There is a lot of buzz about it.  I know it sounds silly but I feel like I lost a good friend.

Off-Topic / Why are people undependable?
« on: September 17, 2013, 08:06:42 pm »Message ID: 795179
I schedule mystery shops for two different companies.  Every morning I wake up and my email is full of people telling me that they are so sorry, but they did not get around to doing their shop as promised yesterday.  The excuses are everything from illness to dead relatives, to accidents and many of them just never respond at all, they just blow it off and then won't answer my emails.  Of course people do have things that come up and so I really try to be understanding and take them at their word, but if I have 50 people scheduled to do a shop, what are the odds that on a typical day, every day 25% of them had something serious enough happen that they could not complete a job that they were contracted to do?

Some people will cancel and reschedule 3 times and when you tell them that you won't schedule anything for them again, they actually become indignant and tell you that you just don't understand how hard they are trying.

I just wonder why no one seems to care about keeping their word and being reliable anymore.

I have had people do this even when they were being paid large bonuses.  It really starts to make you not believe anyone.

Off-Topic / Worst Bosses in the World
« on: August 06, 2013, 08:56:29 am »Message ID: 776721
I have this independent contractor position that I have been working for almost two months.  This is for a very large reputable company although the division is rather small.  I was  told that the first month I worked it would seem like a lot of work for the money but if I did the work, after that first month I would get more work given to me and it would get easier.  It is a very long story, but so far here is how it has come down.

I am still waiting on my first paycheck of $66 for about three weeks worth of 14 hour days seven days a week.  During the 2nd month of those types of hours, the company I work for lost a contract, so about two weeks of that work were taken away and I was not paid for it because my contract says the client has to accept the work.  Bear in mind it had nothing to do with my work, simply a disagreement the client had with the upper management of my company.

Later in the month, I was given the work back, but I had to start completely over and now was given half the amount of time to complete it.  I met all of my goals and was so proud and looked forward to getting the additional work I was promised.

Now in August, I have just been told that again, the client does not like they way our company did the work (again, not having to do with my part of the work) and therefore, I probably won't be paid for all I did.

If this is not all bad enough, our boss will not even tell us where we stand.  When we will know if we are getting paid.  She is acting as though we are being petty and out of line for being upset.

What is wrong with people like her?  Legally, there is nothing me and my other independent contractors can do, because we are IC's, but honestly, being an IC should not be license to treat people like garbage.

How do I get hooked up with stupid people like this?  This div. is part of one of the largest research marketing firms in the world, so honestly, all the research in the world would not have allowed me to see this coming.  Just lucky, I guess.

Off-Topic / Bad Case of Insomnia
« on: July 27, 2013, 01:31:51 am »Message ID: 771184
Wow have I had a bad case of insomnia tonight.  I was working on a project and just kind of got carried away.  Pretty soon I felt like my eyes were crossing and I was starting to make mistakes.  I tried to go to sleep after that but no luck.  It is now 4:30 and I am starting to get a little tired, but not really.  I really wish we didn't need to sleep.  I would get a lot more done.  I will probably be worth nothing tomorrow and want to sleep all day.

Off-Topic / Dealing with elderly parents
« on: May 24, 2013, 07:28:59 am »Message ID: 741027
It is so frustrating dealing with my mom and dad.  They have lost the capacity to make good decisions, yet they won't listen to any advice.  I guess this is role reversal time.  My dad has plenty of money, but has gotten so bad that he routinely forgets to pay bills and gets late charges.  Then he wants me to call and try to get the late charges knocked off.  I feel bad for him but you can't expect them just to keep knocking off late charges because he can't remember to pay.

Then my mom calls me up all the time and complains about how worried she is because he is getting ripped off by every telephone solicitor that calls because they talk him into buying all kinds of stupid stuff like making him switch him life insurance that he had forever to some stupid accidental death policy.  I mean really bad decisions, yet she won't tell him that she is putting her foot down and handling it herself or getting someone else to.

So they want me to pick up the pieces, but they want to still control everything themselves.  I am so frustrated that I am almost trying to avoid dealing with them because this has gone on for years now and all my attempts to help get construed as me wanting to take over their lives and money.  How do you help someone who really only wants your help when they've made such a big mess that you can't fix it?

Off-Topic / Trend: Doctor's not accepting any insurance
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:31:07 am »Message ID: 726640
I have three family members who visit doctors on an irritatingly regular basis.  They all are having health problems and I am the taxi.  It is sol maddening dealing with doctor's offices and hospitals.  I could literally write a book.  However, I have recently noticed an alarming trend of many of these doctors now stating that they are fee for service only and the patients must pay upfront.  They are not filing any insurance claims for the patients or participating in any insurance plans.  Has anyone else noticed this?

Off-Topic / How do people live?
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:21:30 am »Message ID: 721583
I have been job hunting lately and can't figure out how people are supposed to live.  First of all there aren't any jobs.  In our local newspaper there are usually only 1-2 legit jobs per day.  If you don't qualify or want those you have to dig deeper.  It seems that all jobs that pay a living wage are for people who already have that job and have been in that job for five years or more.  In other words, they don't want to train anyone to do anything.  Even if you have experience they want you to already be trained on their software, computer systems, etc.

I guess it is what happens when there are so many people needing jobs.  The employers can cherry pick to get exactly what they want.  Great for them, but sucks for us.  They can also pay $9 per hour or less.  Around here it is rare for a job to pay for than that even with a degree.

Off-Topic / How do you cheer yourself up?
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:58:02 pm »Message ID: 672233
A few times in my life when I have been beside myself with depression or worry, I sat down and watched hours of America's Funniest Home Videos.  It didn't solve my problems but I promise it takes me out of my own worries for a short period of time and makes me laugh no matte how bad I feel.

Off-Topic / Team Fortress 2 lagging problem. Can you help?
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:19:46 pm »Message ID: 655009
My son tries to play TF2 on Steam but the game is constantly lagging.  His friends don't seem to have the same problem.  I went into settings and put the ones on low that several people suggested on Youtube, but still lagging.  Off topic, but I thought I might just post this and see if anyone has any suggestions.  Thx!

Off-Topic / Depressed over feeling old
« on: December 01, 2012, 02:09:57 am »Message ID: 649910
I just wondered if everyone when they get my age feel depressed over being old.  I am 50 and lately I find myself feeling like fun is only for young people.  It seems like all I do is go through the motions of life to try to take care of others in my family.  I have been thinking about when I was younger and wishing I was young again.  I feel like after you get older all there is is work and worry and that unless you are young and attractive you just blend into the woodwork and don't really matter anymore.

Off-Topic / Tamiflu
« on: November 24, 2012, 08:48:50 am »Message ID: 646130
Anyone ever use Tamiflu and if so do you think it works?  I got up with a runny nose and sore throat.  Then I started feeling sick at my stomach.  I assume I am getting the flu and I remembered my mom had given me a full prescription of Tamiflu that the doctor had given her.  I started taking it, but I heard lately that the FDA doesn't think it works.
