A lot depends on the size of your yard.  If your yard is small, keep in mind that small trees will eventually grow large unless they are dwarf or a species that stays small.  Gravel makes a nice contrast to natural plantings and you can get them in various colors.  A rock garden with low-growing flowers such as creeping phlox and ground cover plants can add interest to a medium-to-large size yard--just make sure to keep it in scale.  I would suggest doing some sketches to scale on graph paper for your planting areas first, then decide on the types of plants or other landscape media to fit the spaces.

I would go to your gardening center and ask a lot of question about how big the trees will get, weather they will grow where you live. Depending on where you live as to how much water they will require. Here in N.M. for the most part we need desert trees because of the heat and lack of water. So ask a lot of questions before planting.

We have put vegetables in a lot of our flower beds, a lot f them are really pretty as they grow, just for a little change up.  The gravel and rock gardens can be beautiful and very low maintenance.

That depends on what climate you live in.  If you're growing orchids outside it must be pretty tropical.  I live in NM and I grow a vegis and sunflowers in my back yard.  A lot of people here zerascape to save water.  If done right it can look great and be very low maintenance.

I love messing around in the yard.  I'm disabled so sometimes it is difficult, but I still get around to doing the things I want to do.  We lease and the owner's nephew is the property manager ... he's useless, so my aunt and I do a lot of the stuff that really should have been done.

I'm going to put grass seed down in the little postage stamp front yard to fill in the blanks.  Also, I've taken some of the bark out and put in fake grass for the dog (mostly so I can see the poop and get it right away! TMI - I know) We live in the southwest been in drought for many moon.  Also adding mint as a ground cover in a few areas.  I found a chocolate mint that I'm going to get ... smells like peppermint patty!  yum ... read that you can use for tea, etc.

Well, that's probably not much help, but it's what I'm going to try to do ... piece by piece as my body allows.
Have fun!

My latest thought came this morning when I saw how high the grass got while we were Condo-ing the last couple of weeks. I think the best plan would be to sell the house and get a mobile home with no yard except maybe a few potted plants.

Hosta's is a plant it has green leaves and looks like a bush plus it sprouts flowers very beautiful also you can cut off a portion of it every spring and it will multiply . also Iris's are nice because they come in a variety of  colors so you can pick what color you like plus it multiplies every year.  I hope this helps you.
