Homeless good Samaritan left to die on NYC street"
« on: April 27, 2010, 12:11:48 pm »
NEW YORK – The homeless man lay face down, unmoving, on the sidewalk outside an apartment building, blood from knife wounds pooling underneath his body.
One person passed by in the early morning. Then another, and another. Video footage from a surveillance camera shows at least seven people going by, some turning their heads to look, others stopping to gawk. One even lifted the homeless man's body, exposing what appeared to be blood on the sidewalk underneath him, before walking away.
It wasn't until after the 31-year-old Guatemalan immigrant had been lying there for nearly an hour that emergency workers arrived, and by then, it was too late. Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax — who police said was stabbed while intervening to help a woman being attacked — had died.
Tale-Yax was walking behind a man and a woman on 144th Street in the Jamaica section of Queens around 6 a.m. April 18 when the couple got into a fight that became physical, according to police, who pieced together what happened from surveillance footage and interviews with area residents.
Tale-Yax was stabbed several times when he intervened to help the woman, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. She and the other man fled in different directions, and Tale-Yax pursued the man before collapsing. Authorities are searching for the man and woman.

A 911 call of a woman screaming came in around 6 a.m., but when officers responded to the address that was given, no one was there, police said. Another call came in around 7 a.m., saying a man was lying on the street, but gave the wrong address. Finally, around 7:20 a.m., someone called 911 to report a man had possibly been stabbed at 144th Street and 88th Road. Police and firefighters arrived a few minutes later to find Tale-Yax dead. Officials say they're not sure whether the man was still alive when passers-by opted not to help him.

Is it possible that we have lost all sense of humanity, in which we can see a person die and yet not do anything about it?  It saddens me to see that soo many people would pass by and not even try to help.  I guess I am all fashion or a bit sentimental but I would have at the very least called 911!! What would you have done?

It is sad but this stuff happens all the time. I dont know what it is  its like one person dosnt do anything so others wont either  like the girl who got beat up crowd of people standing around  security guards there no one did nothing to help. the security guards could have lost thier jobs if they intervened  but at least lay ontop or just cover the girl so she wasnt getting kicked in the face. as for the other people standing around not doing anything  Im not sure but it must be some kind of crowd mentality or something. Me personaly wouldnt have left that guy on the sidewalk or let that girl get beat up.        everyone is afraid if they help its a lawsuit and that BS
Sue me i dont care  i dont have much anyway. :peace:

I would have called for help, too. Some people are cold blooded and think they are better than the less fortunate.

I think this is a shame I would have tried to help I would have called 911 and started calling out to get people up and moving.  This is totally a crying shame!!  I hope the 7 or 8 people can live with there consciences for not trying.

Well first of all it is in New York and you will learn to mind your own business and not get involved if you want to live. Second people will probably walk away and call police from another location so they don't get killed. That is life, you don't want the killer to see you calling the cops and standing there waiting for them. It isn't because people don't care and more like people don't want to loose their life. That is the world - sad but true. You let the cops do their jobs.

Anytime I see people getting into fights, I will take off because I don't want to be standing there when they pull out a gun and kill someone and then kill anyone who was around that seen it.

I am sorry I have a problem with that, what if it was you? and all people did was what you are saying.  I honestly would want someone to stand up and help.  I could not live with myself knowing I could have done something but decided no to.  There is a saying somewhere "I would rather die trying, than not tried at all"

How could people just walk by and not care enough to call for help.  Maybe if someone with a heart had walked by, he couldve had a chance.  I think all those people that just walked by should have something said to them.  Im glad I dont live in New York.   :crybaby2:

I posed a link about this the other day in another post about Miami vs NY I said this was one reason I didn't like NY when I lived there the people were very rude so I wasn't the least but surprised.  It's just sick what happened to that poor man.

Twice I have seen people laying on the sidewalk, one guy was a little bloodied, they both appeared dunk but I called 911 and reported it.  Yeah you see homeless people on the street and some of them just sleep on the sidewalk but most of them aren't just out in the middle of the sidewalk like that.

Even if you are not a medical professional and can't help the person at least have the decency to call someone who can.  People need to stop being so damned selfish and start caring more about their fellow human beings.

That's all well and good but they didn't according to CNN they said they got one call about a woman screaming but no one called to report some dude laying in the street bleeding.

This story really upset me.  I cannot believe that people are so heartless.  I don't understand how anyone could just walk by and not at least check to see if maybe he was passed out or just to see what was wrong.  I know that people in large cities don't want to deal with the homeless, but come on people would you do that to a family member or a friend.  Compassion towards others has been lost along with chivalry and fidelity.  I hope the two people wanted for this terrible terrible crime are found and charged.  I hope that some news source some where will get footage of the crime scene and enlarge the photos of those that just walked by and post them all over the internet, on billboards etc.  I hope those people see themselves on this footage and feel absolutely totally guilty for the rest of their lives.   >:( :'(
