My opinion is that the use of names and mascots such as this, and the accompanying foolishness that comes with it is very derogatory.

We, just like everyone else are simply humans, we are not items, curios, momentos, artifacts or goofy midgets with big heads running around like fools doing the "tomahawk chop".

Don't bother with the "we are honoring you" whinning, I have heard it thousands of times.......simple...no you're not.

If any other race of people were depicted in this manner they would be livid.
I could go on to list a whole list of demonstrative team names but wont.....I'm sure you get my point.

Wow I think this is pretty stupid. I never considered a mascott to be honoring or degrading to a certain race.....they are simply mascotts.

Some poeple take offense to everything then can just to be noticed.

Next we will have PETA wanting all of the animal based teams to change their name and mascott!

I agree with Walksalone on this one-it's just wrong to use any group's name as a school mascot.  I can think of a million different terms that could potentially be used as mascot names but shouldn't   For the sake of the schools (and the professional teams for that matter), since it has been allowed for so long, do you guys think the ones that already have the team names existing should be allowed to keep them or should they be forced to change their names?  It could cost the schools a LOT of money to change so many things! Should they just be allowed to grandfather in the old names and no one is allowed to create potentially racist NEW names?

I think historical reasons are probably the reason these team names started (I seriously don't think anyone meant any harm by using the names in the first place-why would you call yourself something that you don't like???), but since people started twisting things around, it got out of hand.  Too bad it has to be like this.  If any group should be offended, though, it should be the American bear population-the Cubs and the Bears SUCK!!!  Good thing they aren't a part of the human population  At least the Blackhawks won something

I can see how mascots can offend some people (and in a few cases a lot of people) but i don't know if banning them is the best idea. Mabye we can find a middle ground(?) As for you saying that the mascots acting stupid is "derogatory" ummm... Aren't mascots supposed to be stupid and in-turn entertaining? I dunno, I think so.
