Be careful if you use your home phone when filling out offers
« on: January 17, 2008, 08:51:54 am »
When I was still new to all of this I used to use my home phone when filling out offers.  I noticed that I have a large charge on my phone bill and I never authorized it.  I know this because I always read the TOS.  I reasearched the company and they are on the consumer affairs website warning of unauthorized charges.  When we got the bill my husand called to have the charges removed with no result and gave up.  I called back and yelled until I was told that the charges would be removed but who knows if it will actually happen.

That is good to know. What number would you suggest or how would you handle the situation?

i have a prepaid phone i use. i put a lot of min. on it last year so i would have service for 12 mo. and then used all the min. so they cant charge me and i never hear it ring when they call. but i know what you are talking about i signed up for a free offer and half way through i accidentally scrolled down to the bottom of the page and at the vary bottom in tiny tiny print they said that by clicking submit i was authorizing them to sign me up with two other companies that one was going to charge my phone bill for voicemail. ( i already have voice mail) and i went back and read the TOS and there was nothing in there about the other companies, so i urge everyone to read everything on the site even if it appears to be unimportant

yes read everything!!! also make sure you read about the offer it's self. as some. even freebies. you have to put a number that they can get ahold of you with. as you will not get credit if they can't get ahold of you to valicate the lead. same with prepaid that has no minutes or a phone that is off. if they try to call and hear it's off then you will not get credit and they could put you as fraud. as it stakes to use real info. and a phone off or out of minutes that you don't plain on adding minutes onto would be consiedered a fake number...  so be carefull.

its not really a fake number i do use my phone when i have money to put min. on but i do not have min. all they get is my voicemail. with my prepaid if i still have sevice but no min. it doesnt even ring on my end but sends them to voicemail. so i get all the messages. but its the stupid telemarketers that call with an automated message i hate i hate wasting min. only to find out its same affiliate comany of one i did sign up with trying to sell me something. man i hate affiliate companies...

For those having difficulty with harrassing & unwanted calls from Telemarketers. I have enclosed a website where you can register your Home & Cell numbers for Free. The service was started and is operated by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).  The calls stop within 31 days of you registering your number(s), (although I've had mine stop immediately and have used this service for several years now).

If Telemarketers still call you after the 31 days, you go back to the website & lodge a complaint. There are hefty fines and such that they now have to endure for breaking these boundaries!

Hope this will help some of you out.

oh ok. was just letting you know since i could'nt tell by your post if you meant you just did'nt put mins on because of that. as i knew someone who bought a prepaid with a card a while back. one of those 10.00 phones. where you only have service when you have minutes. and they used that for offers and got in trouble.  your phone is like my hubby's. still works without minutes. just no calls lol

do not call registry only works if it is a unsolicited call, and since i signed up i gave them permission for them and there affiliates to contact me it doesnt work.  however you can request them take you off there list

As I stated and was quite clear in doing so. I said the Do Not call registry is for Harrassing and Unwanted calls. Since you gave your sole permission for certain ones to call you, of course it wouldn't block those in which you gave your permission to. The whole bias in which the FTC started this program was for unwanted calls.

BUT, I will also add this: Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors are still being permitted.

A helpful read:

yeah they call a lot around election time., i just wish when you sign up for some of these offers they gave you a choice of whether or not you wanted them to call you at your home. but i just tell them not to call me anymore, most repect that. and your right, i have been on the do not call list for over a year and my phone still rings off the hook (mostly from doing stuff on here) so it is good for everything else

Correct, and seeing that you didn't give them permission to call you for the:
"rest of your life" even if you decided you're no longer interested in their product/services. The same telemarkerter's are OBLIGATED by LAW to put you on their: Do Not Call list,
once you tell them to do so.

And MystedMoon is also correct, while the ones that "are allowed"
most likely won't be ringing your phone off the hook.

I now use my Brring #. Although Brring hasn't paid me yet,
(most likely wont) I appreciate their minute long "commercial"
caller's have to wait for. Most just hang up, and the ones that
do wait and do get through are still screened: leaving me
the option to return their call or not. Because some sell/give your info
to affiliates.

I did have to call one and "pitch a fit" because they looked
"in the phone book" and called my family too, using ME as a reference
for car insurance! I was like: "if I said your rate's are too high,
why are you calling my family using MY NAME as a reference? WTH?
Don't ever look "in the book!"
(of course they denied it, yet told my family they knew I drive an Infiniti.)
But it finally stopped. Because Homey don't play that!  ;D

So it's all good now.

can't remember if i ever posted it or not.. but brring finally got back to me! they said that with it still being in beta and all the testing going on they fall behind on everything. but asured me that payments will be sent out soon. and they will email as soon as the checks go in the mail.... so we'll see. i don't see why they would'nt just use vpaypal because of the beta and testing. would make things alot easier then writing out checks and mailing them. who knows.. maybe they'll change it. ether way i do the same thing. use my brring number for them all cept for trails. trails i use my home phone. my brring is linked to my cell. that way i have caller id to see who it is :)

Maybe setting up an account with PayPal cost's them or it's a hassle,
and they are still beta/testing.  :binkybaby:
I do know of one lady that has been paid by them.  ;D
Good luck and keep us updated.

It cost's me lots, but it is worth it.  :angel11:
