LIKE RIDING A BIKE
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:43:58 pm »
I wonder who first realized that riding a bike is something you can never forget, and coined that phrase. Does anyone have any ideas, or any other phrases that reflect something that we know, but might not think of as we encounter it every day?

I wish I knew.  I tried looking it up on-line but couldn't find anything.  Then I realized, I have not rode a bike in over 20 years so I'm dying to find out if this is true.  After all, I had not ice skated in over 30 years and I took my son ice skating along with his Greek School.  I brought along skates that I had from High School with the pom-poms and all.  Had to change the shoe laces!  But, I still could ice skate.  I'm just guessing that I'll experience the same with biking.

I would say it's half way true.... you won't forget how to follow a recipe, but having good seasoning it's onother thing.

I tend to do better remembering things that actually required hands on, I might lack some practice. But ussually I can go years without doing something and with just a little paractice I tend to get right back on track. i.e. riding bikes, back flips, flips in genral, rock climbing, running, math problems, reading faster, typing etc. etc.

Motor skills seem to stick. Where I parked my car on the other hand...

I agree with the motor skills thing...I would attribute most of that to muscle memory.

I never even thought of muscle memory being the reason for always being able to ride a bike. I can't skate, so I don't have the experience to prove the fact of that being "like riding a bike." But I know there are other things that have come back to me  after years and I'm still good at it.
