Learning to Ride a Bike
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:16:02 am »
Hello guys, just thought I should share with you, I bought a bike two days ago hoping it was a easy to learn. Today, I am still struglling to learn how to pedal even though I have practised and practiced. I bough this bike so it could help me loose a little weight and for some transportaion but it has not been going good at all. I feel stupid because I can not do what most people of my age can do. Any tips or encouragement will go a long way. Thanks
Funky

I learned as a child, the young man next door taught me the hard way. we went up the slope and he helped me on.  And a way i went. I thought he was holding on to the bike, Nope it was pedal and guide or fall.  Yep i fell. But got right back on and kept trying until i had it down. Just like riding a horse  keep trying.

I would try a stationary bike at first, that's what I used at my local gym, plus I have a mini bike I use to strengthen my legs, you can sit on the couch and use it.

I'm trying to teach  my daughter to ride a bike now. She is 8. She is scared of it and has trouble with the balancing. It will just take time. Good luck. You can do it!

Find a time and place that is private and practice. Get a friend to stabilize the bike as you ride it and when you feel comfortable go for it. Good luck.

I learned how to ride as a kid on the farm on gravel.  Since no one balanced me and gave me the start, I put one pedal down low and pushed off as I learned to balance the bike.  I kept my free foot low to the ground so I could catch my balance should I start to lean too far.
One foot on a pedal, push forward with the free foot, and glide until you can balance/feel comfortable; then put your free foot up to the pedal and start pedaling.  You will get the groove and find that balance sweet spot.

Good luck

brain balance exercises. I hope you don't have a brain problem. I wish you good luck on your bike riding, because it's fun, fun.

Don't be embarrassed, just because many people learn to do it when they are younger doesn't mean it has anything to do with age. The first time you try is the first time you try. Good for you for learning something new!

I admit I got pretty frustrated with learning to balance as a kid, it took me a while.

I was an adult and felt bad since my kids were both able to ride so I learned when we were camping
