Food stamps anyone?
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:57:56 am »
I went on food stamps (snap) for the first time in my life in  oct of last year as part of it i put in jobsearchs, 16 a month. Tomorrow I have to turn a jobsearch in but i also have  a job scheduled with Labor Ready tomorrow as well. If i miss the appt i get sanctioned and  my food stamps taken away for six months , If i go to the appt then i miss out on making cash money at my job and it makes me look unreliable. :( :( Anyone else on foodstamps?

You're not the only one and they are very helpful in time of need.

No, I'm not on food stamps, but I have knowlegde of how crazy the whole system can be. It's definitely not "user friendly" for people who really needs the benefit.

You can't reschedule your snap appointment?  My local office is usually pretty good about rescheduling if necessary.  That is the best thing I can say about the CHFS in my town... the people are helpful when they can be.

I was on food stamps before and it was very helpful at the time. Hopefully I will never have to deal it again any time soon... the system makes you jump thru hoops just to receive them

I don't know the about the state that you are in but in our state is crazy with the rules that they have but something you may try is to call the worker that is working with you for the food stamps and explain that you need to go to work and see if you can reschedule.  Another thing that you can try is to talk to the place you are working and explain that you need to go for the foodstamps and ask if it will help to get a letter from the person that you have the appointment so they understand why you have to keep the appointment.

Nope the appt is with a career center outside the control of my case worker and they are strict on either show up or lose out and since today was a holiday it wasnt open so i couldnt bring the job search in early. My job tomorrow involves driving an hour out of state so it not like i can run on my  break to do this  5 minute appt.

That is a difficult situation, reminding me of the situation I currently have with my unemployment.  I have to go in to report that I have started a new job in the middle of my claiming period (meaning I am eligible for one week of unemployment in this period and not both) yet the only time I can go to the office is when I am supposed to be at work.  I have to attempt to go in before work and hope I can get it taken care of before I make it to work on time.  This is a situation where a phone call will not do, and I can't make it in to take care of the situation during my short half hour lunch break.  It is just unfortunate that I'm in a situation where that $86 dollars is something I need to get by until I get my first paycheck.

I been on food stamps for a few years now. I was getting about $200 worth of food stamps until I started working part-time in June 2010. Then, they cut me back to $61 a month. The money I get from work is pretty much just for gas to get back and forth to work. I can barely put food on the table for myself and I live alone. So, Im thankful that I don't have to share my food with anyone and money too. I would like to have someone in my life but, its impossible for now.

I'm so thankful there are food stamp programs for those who really need it.  Especially those with little mouths to feed.  The way food keeps going up, it's a wonder we all won't be on them in the future.

I have been there on food stamps before not now. They are nice when you have little ones.

My husband and I were on food stamps for a few months and he had to go to the job training classes and put in so many applications a month. He got a temporary job that lasted just 3 days and they cut us off. In order to get them back we had to start all over again. It was all just a big pain in the backside. They want you to jump through their hoops like a circus act but you have to do as they say or you don't get what little help they are willing to give.
