home phone bill scam
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:55:00 am »
I just wanted to warn everybody about a scam that's going around. My father has been getting monthly charges of 12.95 from various third party billers on his phone bill. They said that I had signed up for it, but I never use the home phone number online, because I don't pay the bill. I realize that there are a lot of resources available online for whoever want to get phone numbers or any other information about a person. But it is obviously a scam, because if they have been real they would have realized that the phone bill is not in my name.

I had this issue before all you have to do is to contact your phone service provider and opt out everything and stop accepting the third party bill options they can do that you just stop authorizing them from accepting those signups

Dang, That is why I just have a prepaid cell phone. Used to have a wireless plan through Verizon and was getting charged random things that I never used. The service was amazing where I lived, but wasn't worth calling every month to dispute random charges being added when I only used it for talk and text.

I had this happen to me a few months ago. The Company was Identity Protect. $14.95/mo. I called Frontier  (Verizon) and the 800# for the co. that was on my bill. Frontier put in a research request and stopped future billing. They eventually put a credit on my next bill. The company was nasty after I spent 2 days trying to 'talk' to a person.

This is quiet alarming because we always ask to give our phone number everytime we make a returned purchases and even online. Thanks

I don't remember exactly what companies there were. One was OAN, whatever that is, and the other I don't remember the name. My father called Verizon and told them not to allow third-party billing, so that will stop future charges, but he's already been charged twice. He did call the numbers those scammers provided and they said they would send a refund, but I don't trust them.

This has been going on for a long time with third party billing.  The part I hate is that your phone provider allows this to happen and then it becomes a big headache of contacting the third party who charged you and getting your primary provider to remove it.  I had them note on my account no third party billing no matter who it is.

I had several of those. It makes me upset to pay for extra 3rd party charges that I did not sign up for. >:( Thank you all for sharing this information. I will contact my phone company to opt out of 3rd party billing if there is such an option offered, otherwise I think it’s time for me to say “adios” to the phone company that offers me landline. It makes me feel they don’t value its customer’s needs.
