My great-great grandfather, a slave owner, fought for the Confederate flag. It is not a part of my family history that I'm especially proud of. Flying that flag is the same as saying, "I wish my ancestors had won the Civil war, because that way, the South would be a slave-owning third-world country." YUCK!

Agreed. The only time I've ever liked that flag was when it was on the Dukes of Hazzard car.

It's typically a way of displaying your racism shrouded under the guise of free speech and pride for heritage.

Uhh...apparently you're EXTREMELY ignorant of what it represents, dude. I hope you don't mind if I go get a kkk outfit on and gallop around town with a burning cross and shotgun in my hands because, hey, they're just materials.

I think it is an important part of Southern history, but I don't go around proclaiming to be behind it by any means. I don't find it offensive if it isn't being used as a symbol of racism, although I know that is usually its use.

The confederate flag is a representation of the states that rebelled against the union because they wanted to have slaves, causing the civil war. how can ppl fly and display this flag when it is more or less proclaiming to all who see 'i'm racist !' ? not cool.

I am very offended by the flag.  I am native american and I have lived with racism all my life this flag is a outward sign of racism, what was done to the slaves, Asian people and Native Americans by white men was appalling.  The flag to me stand for racism.

The flag may be used by some ignoramuses as a racist symbol, but others use it as a symbol of their heritage and aren't racist. At the time of the Civil War, the North was actually just as racist as the South, and many of the Northern States had slaves.

-The largest slave port at the time was at Boston, Massachusetts
-African-American soldiers in the Confederate army were payed the same as whites; they were payed less than whites in the Union army
-The last state to finally free its slaves was Maryland, which fought for the Union
-The Confederate Constitution allowed for the admission of free states to the Confederacy, banned the overseas slave trade, and permitted Confederate states to abolish slavery within their borders if they wanted to do so.  During the Confederate debate on emancipation, both sides readily acknowledged that under the Confederate Constitution each state had the absolute right to abolish slavery within its borders
-Most people living in the South did not own slaves

Many people who still take pride in their Southern heritage do so not because they are racist but instead because they favor states' rights instead of too much power being held by the federal government.

That is a great point. I am proud to be from the South and enjoy certain freedoms that the government constantly wants and tries to take away. Great facts about the Civil War as well!
