Or a more reliable translation of Exodus21:20-21

“Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property."

The idea behind this law,of course,is to have a fairness in punishment. If a slave dropped dead two weeks later,no one could say "Well,Henry hit Joe a fortnight ago.It must be murder!" The incidents being most likely unrelated.
But at least Falconer is getting in the spirit of the thread, unlike others I know....

You just provided another excellent example of how useless, stupid and infantile these biblical quotes are.  Maybe next time you can give us all some advice on how best to change gears when we're driving our chariots?

In case you haven't been keeping up, we're in the year 2012 now.

....and, if I may further inquire from all you biblical scholars and experts of scripture, when is it appropriate for me to beat my wife, and what method should I use when doing so?  I know the bible has some other interesting verses that discuss this specific subject.  I would be particularly interested in hearing from some of the ladies who have posted biblical verses and the lessons you may have to offer about what the bible says about disciplining our wives.

It's only a question of further biblical wisdom.  I would never think of beating my own wife because, rightly so, I would wake up the next morning (or not) wondering why I had gone to bed with a knife now imbedded in my torso.

Don't forget to carry your gun with you just in case. Never know when you'll need to shoot someone working on the sabbath.

Getting downright mean is ridiculous and sure doesn't further your cause of cutting people who just want to share Bible verses for inspiration and comfort with others.  All it does is make some of you look more and more foolish in your attempts to be cruel and mocking.

We are not living in Old Testament days - we are going by the New Testament, where Jesus Christ is our mediator between God and believers.  No one is saying it's okay or right to beat their wives, so stop with the stupid and idiotic remarks.

It's not funny nor is it entertaining to read some of the mean spirited responses in here.  If you don't like it, no one is making you open the thread.  You have the choice to go along your merry way and/or ignore such threads and posts.  You are choosing to open them, remark in them, try to smear others with different views from yours, and it's getting beyond childish and ridiculous.  You have the opportunity to make your own threads with that kind of mockery - so why don't you take advantage of that?

Hopefully some can act like the "adults" they are supposed to be and realize this world of humans is based upon many beliefs, thoughts, ideas, etc., and do not have to go by what others feel like they are doing in their own lives, with respecting others to live their own lives without the likes of foolish ones who mock and bother others for what they do believe or think.  It's everyone's choice how they choose to live.

I'm going by the new new testament which says religion is a bunch of hockey and just because something has been updated for the new millennium doesn't make it anymore right and it does not invalidate everything beforehand simply because now people don't openly sell human beings or hang people for starting a fire on Sunday. It may be that the new testament is more updated then the old but the fundamentals are still the same. Our society will change in the future, and things we see now in the bible will be seen just as horrendous in the future. Until we realize this we will never escape the vicious cycle that is religion.

Oh and by the way, I have never censored, physically harmed, or even harassed anyone because of their religion. I simply argued with them, and perhaps even ridicule them (though I don't see how some harmless fun poking completely invalidates everything I say. Its hard to keep a straight face around here.) To me all religions are the same. They're all simply fake stories someone (or a group of people.) made up but they try to pass it off as something real. Real logic and reasoning is the only thing that has any merit whatsoever. I should be allowed to mock and ridicule religion just as I am with the silly idea that the world is held on the back of a turtle. Just because other people believe it doesn't make it true, and just because other people believe it now doesn't mean I have to be sensitive to what other people believe. This so called "tolerance" or "political correctness." is simply a softer way of saying censorship.

I don't censor anybody, in fact I want everyone to speak their mind and encourage those with different beliefs to tell me what they believe. I'm not going to respect what they say, but I'll respect their willingness to share it.

I approve of this message.  If religious adherents have the option to believe these superstitions and post such beliefs here, so too do those who do not hold superstitious beliefs have the option to post opposing viewpoints.

One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

Song of Solomon 8:6

"The church had by this time co-opted vampires from their previous folk existence and reinterpreted them as minions of the xristian devil, so it was an easy enough analogy to draw: Just as a vampire takes a sinner's very spirit into itself by drinking his blood, so also can a righteous xtian by drinking xrist's blood take the divine spirit into himself."
-- S. T. Joshi, Encyclopædia of the Vampire: The Living Dead in Myth, Legend, and Popular Culture

Hatred is that leads to dissension often has a reason. Should we bend over to the will of a dictator because he preaches love but not hate? Love and hate are meaningless. Its what we do with those feelings that matter. If that means disagreeing with someone because I think their wrong, so what?

The platitude is misleading since "hatred" isn't the only thing that "stirs up dissension"; contending ideas do so as well.  Additionally, "love" does not "cover over all wrongs".  The "verse" is merely another mindless droning of propaganda for which no thought was given.
