Ever been in an abusive relationship?

So my friend is with this guy who cheats on her constantly with multiple different women and last night he drug her across the floor by her hair and whipped her into the room by her hair.  I have never been in a situation like this and I just can't understand why she stays with him.  Can anyone who has been in a relationship like this tell me why you stayed - what emotions were you feeling.  I just don't know what advice to give her...I know love can make you blind.
