A lot of companies realized, when they were forced economically to cut back on personnel and such, that they were able to make it. They also realized that people were able to take on more responsibilities than they had previously and, right or wrong, they don't want to add additional personnel if they don't have to. A lot of companies are still afraid to spend too much until the global market becomes stable.  It's hard job hunting now - employers used to say "knowledge of Software X" preferred (or something similar). Now there is such a large pool of people to choose from they can make their preferences requirements, which cuts out a lot of folks. There is also the whole "Why haven't you found a job yet" mentality too- employers think if you've been laid off this long something is wrong with you, which usually is not the case.

Software is also getting rid of a lot of employees - there is software doing the job that medical transcriptionist used to do, a lot of software is getting rid of the need for secretaries/admin assts (unless they have additional skills such as donating, able to do newsletters/brochures, etc)..  Just keep trying, take a p/t job so at least you get past the "why aren't you hired" part, realize you won't make what you used to, do some volunteer work (helps with making connections and you can put it on your resume so that you don't look like you're just sitting at home), and don't forget you're a valuable employee even if some fools in HR don't notice it right away!! Good luck

I don't believe it is "so hard to find work right now".  There are plenty of jobs.  McDonalds is so desparate for worker's that they are shipping them in from othe countries. There is an overabundance of accounting, IT, and nursing jobs.  Pretty easy to find work if you are a good doctor.  Maybe you are above working for minimum wage and not willing to climb the corporate ladder or too-much pride may be an issue.  Perhaps you haven't pursued the necessary educational channels? What about starting your own business?  There are plenty of opportunities out there if you apply yourself.  Pointing fingers and hoping for people to jump on the there-is-no-work bandwagon isn't going to make you more marketable.

When I lost my last job I realized I had a few gaps in my resume that separated me from other people who were being hired.  Having an education, references, and a support mechanism is great; but the thing is almost everyone else has those same exact things.  I'd recommend increasing your resume portfolio by volunteering once a month for some type of charity, community service, or asking to post a weekly blog on a site you have interest in the subject matter.  If you find some type of niche that shows you're trying to better yourself and society it can help separate you from other potential job seekers when you go in for an interview.

Glad to hear you have work in Colorado.  Down here in NM it's different.  I used to work in aerospace, but got laid off from the only testing lab in the region.  Today the ads are few and they require a degree, certification or specific experience.  I have none of these.   :dontknow:  That's why I'm working online and building up a website business.     I just wish I hadn't wasted so much time going after a brick and mortar job, to please other people.   :-[

My boyfriend is looking for work and I keep telling him that you have to settle for something. Something that may not be the best or greatest job right now or pay that well but you have to take what opportunities are in front of you and then work from there. It's really hard finding a job, I hope once I'm done with my classes it won't be hard for me. I went back to school, that might be an idea too so you can find a better job.

We are in the midst of a recession.  Don't give up.  Things will turn around soon.

I definitely am!!! I didn't even get hired by Dollar Tree! Ugh...
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
This is the internet, learn to let people have opinions. And don't be so sensitive.  8)

I hate how everything you apply for is online. If you don't have the right keywords or whatevery specific whatever the computer is scanning for you never get the chance to talk to a real person.
